Overview

CATHEDRAL....is a notable novel of power and interest marking the close of an era ending with the Queen's jubilee in 1897. A great historical novel! 335 Pages In Print!

• This volume includes a “Detailed Biography” of our author, Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole.

Its action covers less than a year. The central theme is the Polchester cathedral, splendid and massive, "become a god demanding his own rites and worshippers." Against the background of its magnificence and petty village life is fought the duel for supremacy between simple-minded, autocratic archdeacon Brandon, symbolizing the arrogance of the church, and Canon Ronder, used by destiny as a blind, impersonal force to break in pieces the old order to make way for the new.

Mr. Walpole possesses almost entirely the qualities which seem to me the base, the absolute foundation, of a beauty without which creative writing is empty. In him, to become as specific as possible, there is splendidly joined the consciousness of both the inner and outer worlds.

The remarkable delicacy of our author’s perceptions is made apparent: it is impossible, in thinking of his books, to separate what occurs in the sphere of reality from the vivid pressures, the dim forces, that, lying back of conscious existence, are always gathering like portentous storms behind Mr. Walpole's stories. To have stated so calmly his passionate belief in just these influences was, at the time most of his books were written, an act of that courage he has so persistently extolled.

Great writing, good understanding of human nature. Wish i could truly walk the streets and stand in the cathedral with light filtering in.
