Overview

This landmark resource, the first fully-based on the authoritative NABRE translation, contains the trustworthy study notes, expanded essays, and informational sidebars which have guided and informed students and general readers for 25 years. In this new edition, one-third of the Reading Guide materials are new, and all of the other Guides have been reviewed and revised by their original authors.

The extensive Reading Guide, the focal point of this volume, leads the reader through the Scriptures, book by book. References and background information are clearly laid out to guide the reader to a fuller understanding of the Bible. New to this edition is a more extensive treatment of the biblical background, including history and archeology.

Other outstanding features include: a 15-page glossary of special terms and complete Sunday and weekday lectionary readings for the liturgical years of the Church. Thirty-two beautiful pages of full-color Oxford Bible Maps come with a place-name index for easy reference.

Perfect for both higher education and clergy, Bible study and general readers, The Catholic Study Bible is an essential resource for both experienced students and first-time readers.

The New American Bible Revised Edition:

The New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE) brings to culmination the work of nearly 100 scholars, including translators, editors, and a subcommittee of Catholic bishops who provided extensive review of the biblical text over a period of many years. The NABRE is the first major amendment to the New American Bible translation since 1991. It features:

*The first update of the Old Testament since 1970, taking into account recent archaeological and textual discoveries.
*Complete revision of the Psalter.

An extremely helpful Bible for conducting Bible study. The guides included in this version allow the reader to understand the context and the time frame in which the Holy Scriptures were written. Recommend this version for Catholics and Non-Catholics!

This is a great study Bible. The senior editor is a world-renowned biblical scholar who has co-edited and contributed to ecumenical study Bibles. The contributors have excellent reputations. I like the way the essays and features frame, in my lay opinion, an intelligent discussion of and introduction to Catholic faith. I had a bit of trouble understanding the layout at first, but when I did grasp the layout, it became a helpful tool. The translation is an authorized Catholic one, though many Catholic authorities recommend the RSV. I like the translation. The summary in one section of each book of the Bible is particularly useful. This Bible offers an introduction to reading the Bible in terms of doctrine and sacred history.

This is the first actual Catholic study Bible I have found. It is a wonderful study tool and has a lot of informative commentaries and history.

There are many versions of the Bible to choose from for the purpose of studying the Catholic Faith and its rich origins from Hebrew Tradition. The Catholic Study Bible through its accurate translation and rich footnotes link the the transition between the Old Testament Covenants of God and the descendants of Abraham with the New Testament Sacramental Covenant started by Christ. This Bible provides maps and photos of significant places giving a realistic perspective of the migration of the Hebrew People between Egypt and Israel, the travels of Christ during his three years of ministry and the travels of the apostles and disciples during post-ascension evangelization. The preface summary and footnotes of each book link the scriptures in the Bible as to give the reader a better understanding of the who, what, where's and why's of the scriptures by distilling the knowledge of knowledgeable theologians and historians.

I enjoy reading various versions of the Bible in order to develop a better understanding of what's written. I did not have a Catholic Bible and this one has helped me understand another viewpoint.

I use this bible for bible classes. The history of the early church. What our early fathers of faith though is outstanding.

What sets this bible apart from other New American Bible versions is the comprehensive 521 page Reading Guide at the beginning of the book. The Reading Guide discusses every book and provides summaries, historical context, theological interpretations, and additional reading suggestions. It also includes sections on biblical history and archaeology, Catholic interpretation of the bible, and challenges in interpretation, among other topics. Each chapter in the bible begins with a box indicating the Reading Guide page numbers so that one may refer to the Reading Guide easily for context. The footnotes and references are the same as any New American Bible version. For those interested in studying the bible alone or in a group, the Reading Guide provides the guidance and background information to do so.This version does not include the Old Testament books of: 1 Esdras, 2 Esdras, or the Prayer of Manasseh (Apocrypha in Protestant bibles).

I needed a Catholic Bible to learn from--I needed more than the Scriptures--this Bible was recommended to me by a friend and I really enjoy it. I can understand the vast amount of notes in the "Reader's Guide" sections which helps with my understanding. The print is also larger than most Bibles so it makes reading this one much easier.
