I ordered a copy of this Bible, and actually ended up returning it because I found its usefulness highly questionable. Before I explain why let me state my "bias" upfront. I am a Protestant Christian strongly considering conversion to the Catholic Church. I bought this Study Bible for the notes on the books that Catholics consider canonical but Protestants reject (Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach or Ben Sira or Ecclesiasticus, Baruch, 1st and 2nd Maccabees, and sections of Daniel and Ester). I own several Study Bibles including the NIV, ESV, and NLT Study Bibles- but none of those contained the deuterocanonical books, and this seemed like a good option to go with since the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible (which I really like, and uses the RSV-2CE version of the Biblical text) is only available for the New Testament. Let me first say how disappointed I was upon receiving the item to discover that the footnotes with the text were only the standard NAB notes that are available in most editions of the NAB including the free version on the USCCB's website. As far as I'm concerned this amounts to almost not having footnotes since this is nothing original and can be read for free online or considerably less money in print. The same is the true of the introductions before each book. Additionally it should be stated that many people, including myself, find some of these NAB footnotes and intros to be highly problematic given that they sometimes question the scriptural basis for Catholic teachings and often favor modern critical "progressive" scholarship with regard to authorship and other issues over tradition and other scholars who favor the traditional view. Sometimes the notes fail to adequately express that the view they present as most probable or mainstream is in fact only one theory or speculation, and evidence might not be mentioned for theories more in line with Christian tradition. The original study content found in this book is most notably the extensive reading guide found at the front of the Bible, which is loaded with information about each book. This was the best feature of the CSB, but I still took two issues with it. The first being its placement at the front of the Bible meaning that if you wished to consult it you have to flip back and froth from the text to the guide (and with really thin pages in the paperback edition you have to go slowly to avoid ripping or creasing the paper), and while the parts of the guide I looked at seemed more faithful than the footnotes there was still a clear imprint of liberal scholarship in the reading guide (such as advancing the claim that Paul likely didn't really write 1st or 2nd Timothy himself, etc.). So at the end of the day I found the Catholic Study Bible to be different (and less useful) than other Study Bibles I own because of its organization and sometimes (but not always) disturbing because of its perchance for critical scholarship. The reading guide had some good information in it, and some of the footnotes are good too, but I don't think this Study Bible is worth $27 given its problems if you have alternative choices. If I found a copy at a used bookstore for at least half off, I might buy it again to use as a reference text, but overall I can't recommend this to Christians who want to use it to grow in their faith.

Contains grotesque adult content, incl. genocide, rape, slavery, torture, and child abuse... Many of these atrocious acts are commandeered by authority figures. I reccomend reading this entire book, BEFORE deciding to share it with anyone.

New and improved - recommended for study

I have used the first edition of this book for many years. The authors, editors, and publisher has made great improvements to the format, content and layout. In particular, I like the smaller form because the book is not as heavy and easier to use. the new tabs help find sections more quickly and the integrated maps and diagrams (e.g., Abraham's family tree in Genesis) are visually appealing and helpful to understand the content. Excellent work!
