Overview

This stunning debut combines reading with the world of internet gaming to create a masterful new genre that will allow teens to take the story from the page into the world of cyberspace and beyond.

Things weren't so peachy in Cathy's life before Victor broke up with her. Her father died unexpectedly, she's failing school, and her best friend is mad at her. But now things have suddenly gone from bad to very, very, very, bad. Take Victor, for instance. Sure he looks like he's around Cathy's age, or at least young enough not to make her mother freak out, but what if he's older than he appears? Like maybe 200 years older. And what does the death of Victor's co-worker, the strange mark that appeared on Cathy's arm, and the surreal behavior of several Chinese elders have to do with it?

Through Cathy's unique and irresistible voice-and lots of proof in the form of letters, photographs, date book entries, telephone numbers readers can call, websites they can access, as well as secrets only a careful reader will be able to decipher-readers will enter a strange and fascinating world where things often aren't how they appear.

Editorial Reviews

Brace yourself; you've just fallen down the rabbit hole into the domain of digital fiction. In this interactive debut novel, readers are invited to join troubled teen Cathy as she probes the real reasons for her breakup with her boyfriend. Clues are everywhere: letters; snapshots; date book entries; telephone numbers that readers can actually call; actual web sites; and clues imbedded in the text. Following the trail can be a singular experience or a happy group activity; in any case, it will be great fun.

CATHY'S BOOK is being marketed as a new kind of young adult novel. It's interactive, with a pocket of 'evidence', real phone numbers and websites, and other extras to help you learn more about the case. To be honest, though, that wasn't what made me love this book. Sure, the extras are cool and all, but I don't think they are necessary (and that's a compliment to the book, really!). CATHY'S BOOK could have stood on its own as a wonderful young adult novel.

It's the story of, as the title suggests, a girl named Cathy. I suppose she's fairly normal at first (though she is a better artist than most of us--I love the drawings in this book!), but she quickly finds herself mixed up in some shady business, due to her involvement with Victor, her older possible-boyfriend. I can't say too much without giving away the awesome plot twists, but nothing turns out the way you think it will! It all comes together quite nicely in the end, though. The startling revelations that finish this story, however, could set up a great sequel, and I hope that one is at least being considered!

CATHY'S BOOK is fantastic for a number of reasons. There are great pictures (and usually I'm not a fan of pictures in novels--I think it distracts from the writing), it's well-written, the characters (especially Cathy) are realistic, and the plot is quite suspenseful! It's not all action and suspense, though--there's a bit of romance thrown in (that is, after all, the reason for Cathy's involvement in the first place), which makes it fun. The only thing that might subtract from the awesomeness of this book, I think, is the fact that the publishers or whoever made this decision seemed to think the great story needed 'extras' to make it worth reading. None of the press I've read on this book mentions the great novel; instead, it talks about the 'extras.' That is not what makes this book worth it, not at all!

I went to B&N today just to browse the books and not to spend because I spend enough as it is and I just so happen to come across this book in the TEEN section. Now this book is more for teens and I am 23 '24 next month', but this book just caught my eye and called out to me. I picked it up and flipped through the pages and instantly fell in love with it. To me this books is so interesting, unique and funky all at the same time. The book is written in journal like manner with some pictures and sketches drawn by the main character herself. Not only does it have that but it also comes with a little of cool things you can go through, such as, comic strips, letters, photos, ripped up photo, flyers, a chinese take out menu, a newspaper clipping, etc.. If you are looking for a new and cool way to read a book this book is the way to go! So stop by your local B&N bookstore and pick this book up for yourself and a friend! Remember your never too old for a book like this!

I have never been so interged into a book until I came across this book. My parents got me 'Cathy's Book' for Christmas and I have been reading it none stop for the past two days. It leaves you with so many mysteries that you either can think of what happened yourself or there will be a second one. I highly recommended this book to everyone who can read something with an open mind, and not expect it to be like something.

This book is great! Whoever doesn't like it, wouldn't know good literature if it slapped them in the face. It's a great cliffhanger book, and the evidence is pretty fun. If you live in Arizona, like I do, the phone bill won't be very high.

i just started this today but its interesting and very interactive. the only problem is you most likely can only read it at home since there are numbers to call and websites to visit.. but so far its good!!

Almost forgotten about this one. Recalled browsing through the shelves and the spine was what caught my eye. Then scrolled through the book and checked it out, thinking it was something different I guess? But thought it could be a good read. Didn't know there was more in this series. Anyway, the idea was good, pictures and such to go along with the story?

Cathys book is a great read that you can follow along with. The numbers, websites, and other things are real. You can call them and get online and play along. There is also an evidence packet to make the book more "real". You can go through the packet and look at the items that are in the book. This is an interesting book with a good vampire like plot. Most teens will enjoy this book. But others might become bored with the somewhat lacking of a good, keep you in your seat, plot.

Okay, so where to start? CATHY'S BOOK IS AMAZING!!!!! I mean i read a few reviews about it but wasn't really interested in buying it, until..... i was at the book store and i thought "why not?" and man i am soo glad i picked it up!!! so it talks about a girl obviously called Cathy whose boyfriend just broke up with her, and she wants to find out why, and things take.... an unexpected turn. So anyway, the scribbles in the book made me feel like i was actually reading a REAL DIARY! i mean man! all the "evidence" was also great, and the extras are cool but not necessary since you can figure out the story even without the, =, but nonetheless they are pretty cool. and the story is very edgy, and i recommend this book to anyone!! and to the people who think it's too much of a corny concept with the extras, then shut up! i swear this book was probably one of the most engaging books i even read if not the most engaging book i ever read. so pick it up! get a flash light! and read it late at night!! take it to the bathroom! read it during class! it's worth it!

This book is interactive, which is cool! You can call the phone numbers, visit the websites, and every time a character looks at something (like a business card or newspaper clipping) in the book, you can flip to the front of the book and get that item out of the pocket and look at it at the same time as the character. Yes, you can call the numbers and visit the websites, but you really don't have to in order to enjoy the book. I read most of this at work, and couldn't do those things, but I still knew what was going on and figured things out without the numbers and websites. I looked after I had already finished the book at a few of the websites, and they are helpful and interesting! It's a fun read!
