Overview

"Saylor rivals Robert Graves in his knack for making the classical world come alive." —(ortland) Oregonian

"Engrossing...Ironic and satisfying." — San Francisco Chronicle

The third in Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa novels featuring Gordianus the Finder. Gordianus, disillusioned by the corruption of Rome circa 63 B.C., has fled the city with his family to live on a farm in the Etruscan countryside. But this bucolic life is disrupted by the machinations and murderous plots of two politicians: Roman consul Cicero, Gordianus's longtime patron, and populist senator Catilina, Cicero's political rival and a candidate to replace him in the annual elections for consul. Claiming that Catilina plans an uprising if he loses the race, Cicero asks Gordianus to keep a watchful eye on the radical. Although he distrusts both men, Gordianus is forced into the center of the power struggle when his six-year-old daughter Diana finds a headless corpse in their stable. Shrewdly depicting deadly political maneuverings, this addictive mystery also displays the author's firm grasp of history and human character.

On first publication back in 1994, Catilina's Riddle was a finalist for the Hammet Award.

    Catalina's Riddle by Steven Saylor

This is one in Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa series. My first meeting with the series was in a later volume (A MIST OF PROPHECIES)in the library of a senior residence in which I live. I was so delighted with the book that I sought out others by the same author and have now managed to read everything thus far published in the series, mostly in chronological order, plus one of his other novels. I reread the MISTS again in the chronological order and got a great deal more from it this time (though I had loved it the first time).

The title, including the name of a well known figure of the era in which it is set, is tantalizing.Saylor's knowledge of ancient Rome is amazing. The incredible detail, down to the foods of the era are fantastic. I have enjoyed each one of the books in the series more than I can express, and each time I have been eager to read the next one. I should add that I did not find the odd one (not from the series) nearly as enjoyable as the Sub Rosa series

With my knowledge of Roman history, I would imagine that there would be one more left to be produced in this series, and I am eager to hear of its publication.

Clearly I loved the book, but I do not reccommend it without the entire series, because while it can stand on its own, the pleasure is far greater taken in context of the entire series.

I might add that I have donated each of the books in this series, once read, to the library where I first found the authors work, in the interest of giving others the opportunity to enjoy as I have.
