Cats [Original Broadway Cast]

All Music Guide - Sarah Erlewine
Andrew Lloyd Webber's epic Cats takes its characters from T.S. Eliot's book Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Though the book contains no narrative structure, Webber has created one, although what drew audiences to the theater in droves was the charm of the feline characters, not the tale of what happens to them. The score is rather fetching but simple, with moments of elegance, like the now-standard "Memory." The longest-running musical of its time, Cats is at times overrated, but as a whole it retains the charm that attracted audiences. This is the original Broadway cast album, with strong performances from Betty Buckley and Terrence Mann. A high-quality version, ...

A high-quality version, it's not quite as brilliant as the London rendition, but it comes close. In 1998, a video recording of the Broadway cast was released.

    The Very Best of Everything

Cats has a little bit for everyone. Whether it's opera, a little jazz, or even some rock and roll, Cats has it all. Each song stands on it's own, and yet when they all come together, it's just amazing. I think anyone who owns a cat or likes them will find the songs surprisingly a lot alike cat characters depicted in the songs. The CD is a must have.

    Cats

These songs are very good for choir classes. The very fast song, Rum Tum Tugger, Slow like Memory, and mystical like Macavity. These will get them in touch with their various vocal talents. A very emotional statement in the music.

    Purrr...

This is the hymnbook of cat lovers. Fantastic...and you probably know one or two of these cats, be it Mungojerrie, Mr. Mistoffelees, or Macavity.

    The finest CATS soundtrack

Of the two official English CATS soundtrack, this presents the most listening rewards. Betty Buckley is an excellent Grizabella, able to open up to more people than Elaine Paige. Ken Page, Timothy Scott, Stephen Hanan and Terrence Mann all give excellent contributions of the same calibre as Buckley's. The orchestrations have been well-improved by David Cullen and Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Stanley Lebowsky, along with Rene Weigert, makes a first-class musical director.
