Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Elderly Mrs. Mudge wants no more than a peaceful night's sleep. But a houseful of mice sends up a cacophony of ``squeakings and rustles,/ eeking and bustles,'' and so she tries traps, which don't work, and then a ``passel of cats,'' which does. As the cats start ``yowling and meowling,'' several bumbling robbers (cat burglars?) break in and cause more chaos. A militant Mrs. Mudge sweeps out the entire gaggle of kits and caboodlers with her broom. To Mrs. Mudge's surprise-if no one else's-the house is now so quiet she can't sleep. Avendao's (On Halloween Night) acrylic and colored pencil illustrations are filled with plenty of action. Unfortunately, Mrs. Mudge's sharp face and air of complaint are not likely to endear her to young readers, and the inherent humor in the text is underplayed by the ominously skewed perspectives. Wahl's (Pleasant Fieldmouse) new treatment of an old theme is economical, but the text's uneven scansion and sporadic end rhymes often result in halting, awkward rhythms. Ages 4-up. (Aug.)
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3-Old Mrs. Mudge's house has been invaded by mice. When the clever rodents evade the mousetraps she sets for them, she invites a passel of cats in to chase them away. The felines succeed, but when they decide to stay, they become a bigger nuisance than the previous pests. Then three bumbling robbers break in, and cats and crooks do battle. At this point, Mrs. Mudge has had enough. Armed with a broom, she sails down the bannister and chases all from the house. It's too quiet, though, and so she invites the mice back in. The tale is a fun one, but it's muddled by Wahl's poor verse. The rhymes, in some cases, don't relate well to the story. The meter is irregular and forced. Avendao's stylish illustrations are right on target, though. This is a rather awkward read-aloud, but young readers who delight in lively, humorous art will enjoy the pictures.-Marilyn Taniguchi, Santa Monica Public Library, CA
Susan Dove Lempke
It's a busy night at Mrs. Mudge's house. First, mice enter an open window, evade all her traps, and munch her cheese. She doesn't find the "passel of cats" that she invites in to be much improvement. A trio of clumsy, quarrelsome robbers enter next. They tangle with the cats, sending Mrs. Mudge roaring down the stairs to evict them all. The house seems too quiet after that, so Mrs. Mudge opens her window to let her original visitors return. Wahl's verse is funny, albeit somewhat choppy and erratic. It's Avendano's acrylic-and-colored-pencil artwork, however, that steals the show, showing us Mrs. Mudge and her house from mouse, cat, and human perspective. The misty, moonlit scenes effectively set up the story's climax, with a near-end close-up of a crisply detailed Mrs. Mudge yelling, "Bring on the mice." Story time crowds will enjoy all of Mrs. Mudge's callers.
