Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
Ms. Arnold's smoothly flowing, information-packed narrative highlights the domestic cat's history and highlights the parallels in its physiology and behavior and its wild forebears. Encourage children to read, write, sing, speak, and paint pictures about cats-real and storybook, domestic and wild-for four weeks. If you start on April 12, you can end on May 12 and celebrate Cat Festival Day, as they do in Belgium. There, people parade costumed as cats from literature.
Stephanie Zvirin
They are regal, dangerous, lovable, playful--all of these things, as the author points out in this nicely handled natural history of an animal once thought to be evil, once thought to be a god. In her usual clear, well-informed fashion, Arnold sets domestic cats next to their wilderness cousins to explore feline behaviors and the physical characteristics that allow cats to climb, hunt, and prowl so successfully. A very general chapter focusing on domestic cats concludes the book. Hewett, a well-known naturalist-photographer, supplies an excellent variety of good-quality photographs. These vary in size and are attractively placed on the pages along with a scattering of black-and-white sketches. Scientific terms, which appear in bold-face in the text, are gathered in a glossary; also appended is a list of cat species. Part of the Understanding Animals series.
