Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
A nice beginning to this nonfiction text describes how a baby kitten feels and looks when it is just born. A sidebar has "Cat Words," that give the meanings of queen, tom, kittens, and litter. Next is a charming photograph of a litter of five kittens and an interesting fact that a kitten's eyes are always blue at birth and change later. The next chapter becomes more technical as it explains the body of a cat in reference to its eyes, whiskers, teeth, tongue, and claws. Colorful photographs of cats in action add interest to the text as the reader finds out how cats stalk and hunt, take care of their claws, keep clean, and display body language. A chapter about kinds of cats tells about cat breeds, and the last chapter discusses the problem of cat overpopulation. Part of the "Amazing Animals" series, the text includes a table of contents, a glossary, and an index. There is also a 10-question quiz and a page that lists related books and websites. The sidebars throughout the text provide additional facts. This text is both useful for basic research and interesting to read. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
