Cats of Mrs Calamari

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 3Shortly after Mrs. Calamari moves into her new apartment, Everett Gangplank, the new owner of the building, drops by to introduce himself and his dog, Potato. His real mission is to rout Mrs. Calamari's dozens of cats from the building, a feat made difficult by his inability to find his glasses and her ability to convince him that what he sees are not cats. Each visit to Mrs. Calamari's door brings a new explanation of the whiskered, long-tailed creaturescousins from Texas, statues, nieces and nephews. The technique of interdependent illustration and text that works so well in Peggy Rathmann's Officer Buckle and Gloria (Putnam, 1995) also works here. Stadler's cats are just bizarre enough (like his unusual Hector, the accordian-nosed dog) to delight readers, who will doubtlessly search for them on each page.
