Overview

The Catskills, always a favorite retreat for New Yorkers, is undergoing renewed interest as a weekend vacation destination. This is as a result of its proximity to the city and its affordability.

Catskills Country Style is the first book of its kind on the Catskills. Current owners of homes there are stylish innovators, creating a country aesthetic with a new twist, recycling ideas as well as furniture with an individualistic philosophy that showcases an eclectic mix of flea market, yard sale, antique and handmade furniture, sometimes peppered with the latest International high-design and avant-garde furnishings.

The book includes such intriguing historic houses as Olana (Frederic Church's country estate of 1860) and Penroyal Cottage, and the artists' colony Byrdcliff (America's first Arts and Crafts community), which are the forerunners of the retreats of many current artists, bohemians, designers, and stylists.

Author Biography: Steve Gross and Sue Daley's previous books include At Home with the Past, Old Houses, and Old Greenwich Village. They live in Manhattan, escaping to the Catskills and a remote village farmhouse as often as they can.

Francine Prose is a novelist and the author of many books, including Blue Angel, Primitive People, and Household Saints.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
With a multitude of color photographs, Gross and Daley capture the architecture, gardens, and interiors of houses in Santa Fe, NM, and the Catskill Mountains. The homes depicted range from the historic homes of painter Randall Davey (Santa Fe) and writer John Burroughs (Catskills) to contemporary, modern-style dwellings. Each in some way reflects the vernacular style, whether through adobe and timber construction and the use of Native American and Mexican accessories such as rugs, baskets, and pottery (Santa Fe) or through the rustic wood interiors or decorative items such as local flea-market finds (Catskills). Both books are recommended for large interior design collections and where there is an interest. Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
