Amazing. Action packed. Complex portrayal of Selina Kyle/Catwoman.
This is the intro to Ed Brubaker & Darwyn Cooke's redefining of Catwoman for the 21st century. It was this series that help make Selina Kyle into my favorite comic book character and help establish Brubaker as one of the great masters of crime noir in the comic book format. In this book, Selina is moved from the World's Greatest Thief/Anti-Heroine to full blown hero and defender of the East End, a Gotham City neighborhood notorious for crime and police corruption and where the Batman first began his crusade against the criminal elements that killed his parents. We are introduced to P.I., Slam Bradley, who is assigned by the shady mayor of Gotham, Dickinson, to locate Catwoman, who is believe to be dead, after her recent bid to be elected mayor of New York City. The start of the actual series, has Selina investigate the deaths of East End prostitutes, whose deaths are of no importance to the local police, and the re-introduction of a friend from the past, Holly Robinson. Finally, the rest of the story deals with Selina & Holly, as her sidekick, taking on a local drug lord and the corrupt police under his pay, that leads on to the revelation of a Batman Rogue's Gallery villain, pulling the strings behind it all and trying to take over the East End underworld. If you have any interest in Catwoman, crime noir, the world of Batman or plain good writing, please give this book a chance.
