Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula McMillen
This fifth installment of "The Missing" series from Haddix finds Jonah and Katherine trying not only to return a missing child to her historical home, but also to repair the very fabric of time. When 21st century time freezes, Jonah, Katherine, and other time travelers are the only ones who can still move. Before they can figure out what is going on, they are transported to the apartment of Albert Einstein in Switzerland. Tracer images of his working documents suggest that something has steered Einstein onto the wrong theoretical track, which may be the root of the frozen time problem. The child they are supposed to return is his secret daughter, Lieserl, conceived prior to his marriage to Mileva, and hidden away with grandparents in the village of Novi Sad (Serbia). Although the Elucidator has made them invisible, Mileva still seems to know they are present and even manages to steal the Elucidator from them. When Mileva learns that her daughter is gravely ill with scarlet fever, Jonah and Katherine follow her to Novi Sad. In 1903, children often die of the fever and Mileva threatens to destroy the Elucidator if Katherine and Jonah do not save Lieserl; but the consequences of her being taken may be much worse. The surprise heroine in this adventure turns out to be Mileva Maric Einstein who is apparently as smart as her husband and figures out how to effectively use the Elucidator to repair time while still rescuing her daughter. The plot twist comes at the end when we discover JB's real identity. Although this book certainly stands on its own, the real draw will be for series fans already familiar with the premise of children stolen from history and with the time travel adventures of Jonah and Katherine. Reviewer: Paula McMillen, Ph.D.

In my opinion, this is the best in The Missing series so far.

In my opinion, this is the best in The Missing series so far.
    -----
As with the previous books, I will not summarize Caught because I do not want to spoil the surprise. I will simply tease you with the following quote: "Of course, how good can our plan really be, Jonah thought, when it relies on outsmarting one of the most brilliant men in history?"
    -----
Haddix continues to amaze me with her exceptional writing and unbelievably mind-boggling skills of creating an intricate and captivating mystery. While I want her to write a novel for adults, even an epic because I don't want her stories to end, these books are so mesmerizing and intelligent that adults will find themselves sitting on the edge of their seats as well. Please don't take that as an insult to young adults. Adults sometimes want more details that would not be appropriate in a young adult novel and will not find young adult fiction to be satisfying. This is not a problem with The Missing series.
    -----
I almost cried at one point and 3 pages before the end of the book, I almost screamed because I thought I knew where Haddix was going and couldn't believe she would treat her readers so sadistically. Then she didn't go there. Three pages before the end of the book and she still surprised me!

    Write on, Haddix!

"The Missing" series by Margaret Peterson Haddix is definitely one of my top ten. It's up there with "Harry Potter" and "The Hunger Games." Haddix has the perfect amount of suspense, humor, and mystery to knock your socks off! WRITE ON, HADDIX! ~A Mudstar Review~

Can't wait for the next one

Today I finished "Caught," book 5 in the Missing series by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This book took time travelers to the early 1900's and the studies of Albert Einstein and his 1st wife, Mileva. An enjoyable read by one of my favorite adolescent authors. Ms. Haddix excels at combining historical facts with present day drama and suspense.
