    IT COULDN'T HURT!

THE CAUSE WITHIN YOU will inspire and direct those looking to find their calling in life and searching for a purpose. This book is filled with stories of people finding that one great cause that they think they were created for by just finding a need and meeting it. This book is not filled with religious sermons, but principles that will encourage, motivate, and hopefully provoke us into action, and could help us enter into our own destiny and make our dreams come true. There's a lot of fascinating inspiration between the covers here. It couldn't hurt!

    Wow I cant believe this!

This book was wonderful!!! Pastor Matthew's heart behind all of it is just incredible. To read about where he was and how God's hand was upon him the entire way just shows His glory and how He can work in each and every one of our lives. Pastor Matthew is an inspiration to all and just to show that we can rise up and answer the call that God has placed in all of our lives as well! I am now encouraged to just continue to seek after God's heart to see how He wants to use my life for a greater cause. Everyone should read this book and support the Dream Center!!!!!!!!

    AWESOME BOOK!

    I freakin' loved this book.

I'm a fiction gal. I like to read stories. I think one of the main reasons I didn't like Mere Churchianity was because there wasn't a story throughout the whole book. I kept waiting for Spencer to actually act out what he was preaching. But The Cause Within You kept me spell bound from the beginning all the way to the end, a story that began way back when as a sixteen-year-old pastor wannabe who was told he couldn't do it.

It starts out with a mega-church pastor seeing what it's like to be homeless. Literally on the streets sleeping on a cardboard box. I totally cheered this guy on. I thought, Finally! Someone who doesn't just PREACH. Someone who says they have faith and proves it with works! (James 2:14 - Awesome scripture. I totally recommend you pulling out your Bible and reading the book of James in the New Testament).

Reading this book was like a breath of fresh air. It encouraged me soooo much to read about hundreds of people who don't sit around debating. It's okay to have questions and doubts (Happens to me all the time!), but it seems like some people just get STUCK in their questions. Seems to me that we humans have a lot of questions. And for some dumb reason we keep on asking each other. When was the last time you asked God?

Okay, sorry, I feel like I'm preaching. These are just the thoughts churning in my head. Back to the book!

Barnett wrote a lot about what God has taught him, and he ended some of the chapters with a short list called "What I've Learned." I loved that. Totally summed up the chapter and keeps you thinking.

He also wrote about the Dream Center and his church. I have a list of churches I want to visit (Like, The Brooklyn Tabernacle in New York, Joel Olsteen's church, Moody in Chicago, etc.) and his is so on my list. I would also love to visit the Dream Center.

If you're involved in ministry or you're looking for God's purpose in your life, this is the book for you. Barnett is so real in his book. I didn't feel like I was reading about a mega-church pastor, I felt like I was reading about a brother in Christ. He wasn't throwing in a bunch of "what-ifs" or "I think God wants us to do this and that." Instead he was genuine and I whole heartily agreed with everything he said.

    Life Changing

I.Loved.This.Book. What a wonderful composite of real life story, inspiration, hard truths; a great example of someone who is willing to back up the cashing of every check his mouth writes with real action.

Matthew Barnett is the son of megachurch pastor Tommy Barnett. At 20, he began pastoring in Los Angeles and shortly after became very discouraged. The church was in a challenging neighborhood, people weren't coming, and the plans he had made weren't coming to fruition. One night he felt very impressed to go to Echo Park and there he specifically heard God tell him that he must build the people, and God would build the church. This was a big turnaround to how he perceived he was supposed to handle things....but it was exactly what he needed to do. Fast forward about 15 years and Matthew Barnett has seen God do amazing things both in his life and the lives of those around him.

I especially appreciated the obvious humility Mr. Barnett displays throughout the telling of stories in this book. He is a real person following his God-given cause to change people's lives through serving. We can all take serious notes both from his example and the service-driven approach to finding your personal cause.

Please, go buy this book. Then read it. You will be glad you did, and proceeds go to assist the work they are doing at the Dream Center LA....then go find someone to serve. It will change your life.

Better Choice for Someone Who Has a Ministry, Not Someone Looking for One

This book begins by telling the personal journey of Matthew Barnett, how he found his cause and has benefitted others through following his cause. The book then continues by offering guidance on some steps one can take to find their personal cause, and finishes by offering some practical advice on how to make your cause a reality. I believe God created everyone with a specific purpose, or cause, in mind for them. I believe the only way to truly understand that purpose is through a true relationship with God as Creator, Father, and Savior. Even with these things in mind, I did not find this book very helpful. For starters, this book is not very helpful in actually determining one's personal cause is. How can it be, when that is something between you and God? The only mass printed book which will really offer concrete guidance is the Bible. It makes sense, then, that if someone is going to read a book on finding their purpose, they would read the Bible first, not a book written by someone as humanly fallible as the rest of us. In a way, Barnett admits this by emphasizing prayer, scripture reading, and keeping your eyes open as his tips to finding a cause. Without practicing these, the rest of the book is worthless. If you already have a grip on what you think God might want you to do with your life, then you might gain some insight by finishing the book. Major plot points include: Don't be discouraged when things don't work out, act on faith and God won't let you down, ask for help, be patient, and so on. Again, all of these things can be found in the New Testament. For me, the book most succeeded by offering stories of the positive impact one person can have on another. If you are someone who already has a ministry, then you may feel encouraged reading about others who survived the hard times and managed to share God's love with others. It can also act as a good way to refocus on what God has asked you to do. It's very inspirational reading. The book fails the most when compared to its title. This is not a guide to "Finding the one great thing you were created to do in this world." There is no guide to that other than the Bible. Also, the causes emphasized in this book are slanted by the author's own limited experience as a Pastor and leader of the Dream Center. There are many causes which do not involve selling everything one owns and moving to L.A. to help recovering prostitutes or beginning a similar ministry in your hometown. The calling to be a Christian teacher, doctor, grocery store clerk, car mechanic, or parent is an equally valid and important cause as heading a huge non-for-profit. In the author's enthusiasm for his own mission, I am afraid he undermines the less glamorous missions most of us have been given. Finally, the author fails to recognize the fact that very few of us only have *one* cause. A perfect example of this is Eric Liddell who was called to be an olympic runner as well as being a missionary for Christ. Both of these causes are equally *great*. A more mundane example might be someone who is called to be a godly Father and a godly business executive. The ways and means of showing and sharing God's love is close to infinite, and I don't think it is wise to limit people to only one. Recommended for someone who is either hopelessly lost as to where to find their purpose or already has theirs nailed down. If you're in between, this book may not be as help

Subtitle - Finding the one great thing you were created to do in this world

This author is the son of a famous preacher, and felt a lot of pressure to build a mega-church like his father. However, an encounter with the needy in Echo Park changed all that to a ministry to the homeless and street people. He then founded the Dream Center in Los Angeles and this book is how it came to be and examines it's growth and includes success stories of famous and not so famous people who have been helped through this ministry. Matthew really feels that he has found his calling in helping addicts kick the habit, training and helping others find jobs, and helping wherever and however needed. Many of his unique ministries are mentioned including the adopt-a-block program, where volunteers and staff visit the same block over and extended time doing whatever needs to be done.

The stories of people transformed in this book are amazing examples of what God can do in a person's life. Some have become staff members and counselors at the Dream Center to help others and pass it on. The only criticism I have is that God may not call you to that "one big thing " but several things at different stages in your life. I believe God can prepare us for different unique ministries based on our experience, personalities, and talents. Otherwise, this is an inspiring true story of a Christian truly helping others and showing God's love in the process.

    Inspired yet?

The Cause within You: Finding the One Great Thing You Were Created to Do in This World is a book where the title might not be as catchy as it could have been but the one thing that will catch in this book is inspiration. Matthew Barnett was the youngest pastor of his denomination at age twenty, and he took a church that had about eight people in attendance to creating a huge center that reaches out to those in Los Angeles who are hurting and desperate -- the homeless, drug addicts, and anyone who feels hopeless. People come to serve at his church and he stresses that serving will bring out the cause that is inside you, just serve and you will find that. He says that true joy comes when we realize others are better off because of our investment in them.

This is a fascinating book. He is certainly someone who hasn't thought traditionally. A church that is open 24 hours a day? There's always someone at the church serving. Vans go out to feed the homeless. He tells personal stories, too. The story of taking the homeless children to Build-A-Bear was one I really enjoyed, but my favorite was one where he was telling of a woman who started a ministry in his church to pimps. She even got invited to the Pimp of the Year award ceremony, and they all told her they would go to one function she wanted them to go to, and one Sunday morning there was a section of pimps in Matthew Barnett's congregation.

This book isn't a one-two-three to find your purpose in life. Instead, it's a book of inspiration for you to discover that yourself -- or if you already know what your cause is, it's a book of encouragement to keep it up!

I very much enjoyed this book, and will definitely be recommending it to others.

FTC disclaimer: I was sent a copy of this book free from the publisher as part of their summer reading program. The thoughts and opinions of it are my own.

    Inspirational and Life Changing

I highlighted a lot of statements in this book that I want to always remember! Filled with stories to illustrate his points, Matthew Barnett inspires you to find the one great thing that God has gifted you to do and given you a passion for and to get your eyes off yourself to live for something bigger than you. While I don't necessarliy think we were all created to do just one great thing, but perhaps many things throughout the seasons of our lives, either way the points that he makes in this book ring true. I highly recommend this book.

The Cause Within You by 'Matthew Barnett' - Book Review

'The Cause Within You' is a instrument to discover what our cause is. The objective is to assist us find the cause which will make our life. We will learn how to ascertain the cause God has for us. Matthew Barnett talks about the importance of undivided focus in pursuing our cause, the prominence of right attitude and the joy in this journey of pursuing the cause.

He deals with the subject in a profound way. We are ignited in our hearts and minds to pursue our passion as we complete reading this book. This book has been flooded with real life stories to encourage and motivate us. That really makes this book tick.

Some important nuggets from the book which inspired me:

o God's cause for our life is easier to fulfill than our self-designed cause.
o Our true cause will liberate our passion and gifts.
o The best time to figure out the cause within us is now.
Sometimes our cause emerges out of our pain or hardships.
A breakthrough in identifying your cause may come when you least expect it.
Our investment in our relationship with God is the best investment we can make in the pursuit of our cause.

'The Cause Within You' is a real inspiration to people suffering from confusion and inconsistency with regard to their purpose in their life. Matthew Barnett presents the message in an adhesive way throughout this book. The importance of relationship with God in our pursuit of cause is stressed throughout the book. This book will of great assistance to anyone who is leading an aimless vagabond-style life.

I give this one four out of five stars.

    Find your cause

Wow wow wow. The Cause Within You by Matthew Barnett is a life changing book. This book captures the heart of God in what he has for us to do in this life here on earth. There are so many hurting people who need to know that God still loves them, and that hope is still there. A quote from the book that touches my heart still was "hopelessness is exhausting." This quote really explains what so many people in this world are facing day in and day out. Whether they are they are a homeless person, drug addict, or prostitute, like Barnett talks so much about in his book, or a 'normal' person we see in our day-to-day life, so many people have lost hope. Barnett challenges each and every one of us to find OUR CAUSE. We each have a cause that God has destined for us to find. Once we find that cause we can not let fear hold us back from being a part of it. We have to make our mark in order to change this world.
"Your cause was made to consume you. When it does, you become like the sun, a blazing ball of energy that illuminates and brings life to a world of frozen hearts and souls."

    Incredibly Inspirational!

Matthew Barnett, co-founder of the Dream Center in Los Angeles, definitely got it right with this book. The Cause Within You is the most inspirational spiritual growth book I've ever read. At nineteen, he preached his church from 39 people to literally zero. Feeling defeated, God led him to what used to be a park and is now the home to the lowest of the low. After seeing the devastation there in Echo Park, he knew God was calling him to make this his ministry. God said to him "If you reach the people nobody wants, I'll send you the people that everybody wants."
Fifteen years later, Pastor Matthew is walking around the streets of L.A. toting a sheet of cardboard and a well-worn Bible, celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of the Dream Center. His passion is re-awakened as he slumbers the streets with homeless people and is humbled by panhandling the next morning.

Whether you're young or old, this book is for you. Everyone was created for an amazing cause and discovering that cause will change the world. Through his story and the stories of those around him, Pastor Matthew shows us as readers how to trust God and to listen for His dream for us. "God's dreams for you are always bigger-and better--than your dreams for you."

What God has done through Pastor Matthew is an amazing thing--just think if we all lived out the causes within us.

    Great

I am usually not a fan of these kind of books. But I enjoyed this book. The illustrations are great. He explains what God has gave them to do. We never says do what we do at you will have success. He does point people to God and His Word. The author wants people to be transformed by the power of the cross. Then take the transformational power and spread the gospel. I was encouraged by his transparency and realization of his purpose to glorify God. I was challenged to go...

The Cause Within You and amazing read

Pastor Mathew Barnett feels that we all have a cause within ourselves if and when we listen to God. He teaches us ways to learn to listen to what God is telling us our cause is and not what we want to tell God that our cause is. We get to see and understand how to prepare for our cause and how to use our own life experiences for our cause. We learn how to believe in our cause after things don't go as we expect and finally how to experience the rewards of our cause.
This book was amazing. Hearing how he went to the slums in LA to start the Dream Center and reach out to those that society had gave up on. Spending the night on the streets of LA's skid row as a homeless person so he could experience what they go through was heart breaking in his frankness of the telling of his story.
Members of the Dream Center tell their own personal stories about how they came to be saved and in turn work in the Dream Center and help others now. Hearing team member's Alfred's testimony about when he was approached by a grandma who just walked up to him and started to talk to him. He was fresh out of jail was a mean looking guy, had lived a rough life, was into drugs and gangs. Yet he says this elderly grandma with her dazzling smile and beautiful blue eyes was able to reach out to him!
There are so many stories in this book where people are sharing their salvation and then their cause and how it carries on to another person and another. A lady with a special needs daughter who finds her cause in caring for other special needs and terminal babies. She takes this on even though she is met with naysayers along the way including her husband. How many people have the love and trust inside of them to take in the care of a baby who is terminal? She trusted God even though she felt not ready to do it. She had the love of God to take care of these precious gifts to give them a real life no matter how short it was.
There is so much more to this book I think it should be a must read for every person. I grew closer to the Lord while reading this and now I am on my own personal search to find my cause from within from God.
I was sent a copy of this book to review thanks to the Tynedale Media Center.

Absolutely Incendiary!! It's a must read!!

If there was a book that could ignite a fire from within, it would be this book - The Cause Within You. This is by far, one of the most incendiary, life changing and authentically jaw-dropping books I have ever read. The stories of real life people committed to serving and making a difference in the community strikes a powerful cord amongst every individual desiring to make a change. This book challenges each reader to rise above apathy and relentlessly purse the cause that God placed within their hearts. Matthew Barnett and George Barna co-wrote a book that is heartfelt, genuine, awe-inspiring and will even bring you to tears. If you've never known what you were destined for, this book will definitely inspire you to go out and find it.

I can't get enough of this book!! It's a must read and a continual read through out the course of your life. Once you read it you'll never be the same!!
