The Causes of School Violence

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
Well-written and extensively researched, this book uses a variety of angles to answer the question of what causes school violence. Before dissecting the possible causes, Schier identifies the extent and types of the violence that occurs in schools. She also scrutinizes who is perpetuating the violence and the effects of school violence on the rest of the school community. All facts are cited from reputable sources and multiple attempts are made to include the viewpoints of a variety of stakeholders. In the second half of the book, Schier examines the influence of the home environment, media, youth culture, and social factors as she writes about the violence primarily in American schools. Illustrations and photographs are interspersed throughout the text, and most of the pages are broken up with either an illustration, a short quote, or a shaded text box with in-depth information about a related topic. Endnotes include a timeline, additional resources, a glossary, source notes, and an index. This would be extremely useful for a research project, but is interesting and readable enough to be a stand-alone book. Reviewer: Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
