Caving, like any other athletic activity is best learned through practice. The purpose of this book is to teach you basic caving skills in an easy-to-follow manner, and to keep you from making some of the mistakes almost all of us made as novice cavers. The information in this book will help you select the right gear, from cave packs, helmets, and lights, to choosing the right clothes. This book covers many different types of caves from dry, horizontal maze caves to deep, vertical, wet caves. It will teach you techniques to explore them safely and with minimal impact. Hopefully, you will also come away from this book with an understanding of this unique underground world, and what makes caves excellent resources for recreation, exploration, and science.

Excellent book for those interested in cave exploration.

First of all, I'm a novice in the field of cave exploration and have only been in a real cave one or two times. I have always had an interest in making cave exploration a more serious hobby, but was concerned with my lack of knowledge in the field. This book is an excellent guide to those who are just "getting their feet wet". There is a lot of information about how to plan a trip, including essential things that a novice may not think about. I highly recommend this book for those that have an interest in cave exploration.
