The CCNA Official Exam Certification Library, Second Ed., containing the CCNA ICND and CCNA INTRO Exam Certification Guides in a value-priced bundle, is the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and accurate self-study preparation package for the CCNA exam. Now this highly praised collection contains 20-30 minutes of video instruction. This software product contains a series of short instructional videos that demonstrate how to accomplish various CCNA-level configuration tasks on Cisco routers and switches. In each 5-10 minute video, best-selling author and senior instructor Wendell Odom walks users through basic configuration tasks.

The videos consist of animations and video captures of a computer screen displaying command entry and output while Wendell provides audio instruction on how to configure various router and switch features. The videos also provide insight into various tips and shortcuts that truly help make learning easy.

The two books inside this Library are the most recent printings of the 2003 Exam Certification Guides, with all updates included. Well-regarded for their level of detail, assessment features, and challenging review questions and exercises, these books prepare readers to succeed on the exam and in their daily job as a CCNA professional.  The companion CD-ROMs contain a powerful testing engine that allows you to focus on individual topic areas or take complete, timed exams from INTRO, ICND, or unified CCNA test banks. The assessment engine also tracks your performance and provides feedback on a module-by-module basis, presenting question-by-question remediation to the text and laying out a complete study plan for review.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Cisco’s official CCNA study guides have always been excellent: clearly written, authoritatively edited and reviewed. Now both books have been updated for Cisco’s 2005 exam updates and bundled in a single lower-cost package, complete with bonus video instruction from author Wendell Odom.

Whatever path you’re taking to CCNA certification or recertification, this package covers everything you’ll need: networking basics, operating Cisco hardware, LAN switching, router configuration, TCP/IP, RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, WANs, remote access, VLANs, network security, and more. Together, they also contain 800 practice questions on CD-ROM, many of them simulation-based questions that rely on the NetSim LE virtual lab environment.

Cisco’s CCNA Self-Study CCNA Intro Exam Certification Guide (for Exam 640-821) and CCNA Self-Study CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide are still available separately, if you only need one. But most certification candidates will benefit from having both. And, with this package, that’s surprisingly painless. Bill Camarda, from the June 2006 Read Only

    A reviewer

One of the most cost effective and comprehensive resources to study for the CCNA 640-801, ICND 640-811 and the INTRO 640-821 exams! The CCNA Official Exam Certification Library, 2nd Edition, ISBN: 1-58720-169-0, by Wendell Odom is published by Cisco Press. The two book set, is one of the most comprehensive CCNA resources to date. Currently, Cisco offers the CCNA candidate with two exam formats in preparing for their CCNA certification. These are the INTRO 640-821 and the ICND 640-811 exam or the one exam format: CCNA 640-801. The CCNA Exam Certification library is packaged in a two book set. The exam candidate can study for the CCNA INTRO '640-821' Exam and receive a firm understanding of Network Fundamentals, Operating Cisco Devices, LAN Switching, TCP/IP, and Wide-Area Networking and then take the INTRO 640-821 exam. Also, if they have hands-on working experience with the Cisco switches and routers they can utilize the CCNA Self-Study CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide to study for the one-exam format: CCNA 640-801 exam or the second exam of the two test format: ICND: 640-811. This book is a more in depth resource that focuses on LAN Switching, Spanning Tree Protocol, Virtual LANS and Trunking, TCP/IP, RIP, IGRP, and Static Route Concepts and Configuration, OSPF and EIGRP Concepts and Configuration, Advanced Routing Protocol and TCIP/IP topics, Wide-Area Networks, ISDN and Dial-on-Demand Routing, Frame Relay and Network Security. The two certification guides overlap in their content, but it will be clear to the reader that the CCNA ICND book goes in-depth in the topics listed above. I would suggest to begin with the CCNA INTRO guide and when the topics overlap in the two books I would switch to the CCNA ICND guide only after the candidate has a clear understanding of the particular content 'i.e., LAN Switching'. By performing this technique will ensure that you have fully understood material and will be well prepared for the exam 's'. There is a companion CD-ROM that accompanies the book set that contains more than 400 practice questions for the ICND, INTRO, and CCNA exams, including simulation-based questions. The CD also contains flash card questions, hands-on exercises and a light edition of the NetSim LE network simulation software. The full version of the Network Sim software is: ISBN: 1587201313. The certification library book set also comes with the CCNA Video Mentor Library Edition. The CD contains 3 select video labs from the full version of the CCNA Video Mentor ISBN 1-58720-168-2, by Wendell Odom. Updates to the CCNA Self-Study CCNA INTRO Exam Certification Guide can be found at: ciscopress.com/1587200945, as well as, for the CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide can be found at: ciscopress.com/158720083X. According to the Cisco training website, cisco.com/web/learning/le3/le2/le0/le9/learning_certification_type_hom e.html the last date to take the CCNA 640-801, ICND 640-811 and the INTRO 640-821 exams is on November 6, 2007. The CCNA candidate would be extremely well prepared utilizing this resource! I give these materials 4 out of 5 stars.

Not a good Guide to prepare by

In my opinion, this set of volumes is best used by someone who is exploring whether they might like a career in networking or not. It is certainly not effective as preparation for the current CCNA exam. I would only recommend these books to someone with whom I was competing for a job.

    Facilitates an Excellent Review

I used the 'CCIE Routing and Switching - Official Exam Certification Guide, Second Edition', by Wendell Odom, Jim Geier and Naren Mehta. ISBN: 1587201410 as part of my preparation the CCIE Routing and Switching exam. This book provides an excellent high-level overview of the topics covered in the CCIE Written blueprint. However, be aware that it is in fact an abbreviated overview of each subject. This book is well organized, contains an excellent glossary and index, and provides quick summaries of each subject. On many of the topics, the authors provide some excellent insight and unique presentation methods. For example, the mnemonic for the BGP decision process was tremendously helpful. Also, I like the included CD-ROM which provides the entire book in PDF format and an excellent test engine. I did not like the deviation from the standard Cisco Press format in the Foundation Summary section. In multiple instances I felt the new information presented in the Foundation Summary section would have been much more appropriately placed in the chapter. Additionally, I prefer the more specific detailed questions typically found in the Foundation Summary rather than using the practice exam for chapter review. Additionally, I felt some of the topics were discussed so quickly and at such a basic level that it was as if the authors were just short of saying yadda-yadda-yadda. I used this book in conjunction with ¿Routing TCP/IP ¿ Volume I¿ and ¿Routing TCP/IP ¿ Volume II¿ and Cisco's website. Typically, I would read the explanation in the 'CCIE Routing and Switching - Official Exam Certification Guide¿ and if clearly understood everything in that section and was able to add more detailed information, I would move on to the next subject. Otherwise, I would go back and re-read the subject as presented in the Routing TCP/IP book and as presented on Cisco's website. All in all, 'CCIE Routing and Switching - Official Exam Certification Guide does a good job of covering the topics outlined in the CCIE Routing and Switching blueprint. Some topics are cover in more detail (or clear explanations) than others, but overall they are covered mostly at the fundamental level. This book alone does not cover every thing you need to know, but it does do an excellent job of facilitating a thorough review of subject that you must know in order to pass the written exam.
