    The Most helpful CCNA Book!

I used this book as my main study material for the exam & I was not disappointed. It definitely helped me pass the exam! This book is amazingly helpful for those who are new to Cisco or wish to get there CCNA. It is well written & easy to understand. It teaches you the concepts you must know for the exam & also teaches you how to apply them. This book is great! I read through the Cisco Press books before this book & this book was by far much more helpful! I highly recommend this book to those studying for your exam.

Excellent CCNA book for those new to networking

As CCSI's, we normally address the two primary objectives for suggesting additional reading materials as requested by individuals: understanding networking concepts and CCNA certification. Understanding networking concepts: For those individuals that are 'brand new' to networking (little or no experience with Cisco equipment and networking), we would strongly suggest Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guide, 6th Edition. This book provides a simplistic approach to networking and certification. It is easy to read and follow the concepts as he presents the information in a conversational style. His use of examples and visual aids help to assist the reader in gleaning a very basic understanding of networking concepts. We would easily recommend this book as a first networking book for the networking novice. CCNA certification: This book targets the 640-802 exam, which is the composite exam for the CCNA certification. There appears to be some errors in the concepts (like CIDR), and technical editing (like typos). In using the test engine, it does not seem to allow the user to select any specific subject areas to test against. There appears to be no randomization features for the question pools and answers. Also, there are references to the previous exam material (640-801) in the accompanying audio and video CD. Overall: We think this book makes an excellent read for the novice but would recommend additional material to gain a deeper understanding of some of the concepts presented. We would also suggest using additional resources to augment certification preparation.

Good CCNA Reference, with a few Editing Issues

As a CCIE and full time instructor of Cisco courses, I¿m periodically asked by my students for recommendations of study resources beyond what¿s received in the classroom. My hope is that my review of this title will provide you with some insight into the pros and cons of Todd Lammle¿s ¿Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, Sixth Edition.¿ As stated on the book cover, this study guide is intended to prepare the reader for exam 640-802. POSITIVE ASPECTS: * The book presents Cisco¿s published 640-802 exam objectives and identifies the chapter's' in the book that address'es' each objective. * Todd Lammle¿s writing style keeps the reading lively. Specifically, his writing is very conversational, is often written in the first person, and includes more exclamation points than I¿ve ever seen in a technical book :-) * Some of the tips given by Mr. Lammle certainly reflect his experience. He points out tips and tricks which prove to me that he was not merely rewording content from other sources. * Mr. Lammle gives clear, but concise, descriptions of the myriad of technologies covered by the CCNA exam. * The book presented several lab exercises which readers could perform on home lab equipment. NEGATIVE ASPECTS: * The book appears not to have received a sufficient technical edit. As an example, Page 116 discusses CIDR. However, CIDR 'the supernetting of contiguous classful address spaces' is incorrectly defined, where it sounds more like VLSM. * The book contains multiple typographical and topological errors and/or inconsistencies. As one example, Page 408 shows a WAN link icon connecting into a FastEthernet interface. * The audio and video content on the CD seem to have been created for the previous exam, 640-801, even though the cover of the book states the book is targeted towards exam 640-802. Specifically, the copyright date of 2006 on the video predates the 640-802 exam, and the audio content repeatedly states that it is for exam 640-801. While the audio and video still contain relevant information, it was disappointing that no attempt was made to update it to address the current exam. * The Glossary also seemed to have been reused from a previous book. Specifically, there were multiple references to ATM LANE 'LAN Emulation' terms, which are not discussed in the book, and they are not relevant for the CCNA exam. SUMMARY: To summarize, Todd Lammle¿s Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide can serve as a valuable study aid for readers pursuing CCNA certification. While it¿s not without its blemishes, the good outweighs the bad, and therefore is deserving of five stars.

    Fantastic Study Guide

If you study anything like I do you¿ll love this book. Without it I would not have passed the exam. Obviously it covered all the objectives for the test. Todd Lammle¿s way of writing is easily understandable, even if the reader has never worked on routers or switches. Very informative and descriptive. I especially liked the numerous examples. They were easy to follow and strategically placed in the text to drive home the point being discussed. Another helpful aspect of this book is that it makes the assumption that the reader knows nothing of the subject, starting with the very basics and building from there. The chapter end summaries and ¿exam essentials¿ were extremely helpful and reinforced my understanding. I cannot say enough good things about this text, and I¿ve been through many of them.

    The BEST CCNA book, period!

I own too many CCNA books. I only wish I had started with this one. As a recertification candidate I was floored by the amount of new material covered by the current CCNA exams. Todd Lammle has such a great way of presenting the material as it relates to the Cisco CCNA exam objectives, but also with respect to what we CCNA's do every day. Read this book, listen to Mr. Lammle's guidance, work the labs with real equipment or a great simulator like RouterSim's Network Visualizer, and pass the exam! I did! This book is the best, and in my opinion the only, CCNA book you need.

Great Study Guide, But Could Have Been Better

I used this study guide to renew my CCNA (640-802) and it successfully prepared me to pass! The chapters are well organized and the quizzes at the end of each chapter help your self-assessment. The CD includes flash cards, the entire book in PDF format, and practice exams. My only complaints with the book are that it covers more topics than were covered on the exam (some chapters weren't even tested -- and I took the 640-802 twice, so it wasn't just a fluke on one test). This is definitely a good thing in the long run, but problematic when cramming at the end. Also, some information was provided as 'I said it, so believe it', without detailing reasons or descriptions (especially when covering OSPF, EIGRP, STP, etc.). I had to keep Google handy when covering some of these sections. The study guide was a great resource overall, but based on my experience and the experience of my colleagues, I'll stick with Cisco Press books in the future. One of my colleagues put it best: use Sybex/Todd Lammle when you're new to networking, otherwise you'll see the lack of details in coverage.
