Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Carlos E Figueroa Castro, MD (Medical College of Wisconsin)
Description: This is one of the essential guides for the practice of travel medicine in the United States. An online version is available at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) web site.
Purpose: The purpose is to address health risks for travelers and to assist healthcare providers and patients with measures to decrease the risk of these conditions. New and old challenges are a constant in the practice of travel medicine, because of new destinations and emerging infections. The Yellow Book is an essential guide in facing these challenges in a practical manner.
Audience: The practice of travel medicine is different from other disciplines, given the diversity of practitioners who counsel patients about travel-related conditions. The book attempts to be a guide for multiple disciplines, which is difficult, but the book will be useful to everyone practicing travel medicine. It is written by leading experts in travel medicine.
Features: The book has changed significantly from its last edition. New chapters have been added, including one on counseling special populations such as immigrants visiting friends and relatives. The section on infectious diseases related to travel has been revamped with a bulleted style I found easier to use. Color is used wisely to indicate special sections like the yellow fever vaccination requirement and malaria risk by country. An interesting section on selected destinations has been added. The online version follows the same structure, with the advantage of online updates.
Assessment: This is an obligatory source of information for both novice and seasoned travel medicine practitioners. Other textbooks on travel medicine are available, but the structure and practicality of The Yellow Book are difficult to surpass. This new edition has increased the already considerable value of the book. Healthcare professionals should have either this book or the online version readily available when they are evaluating patients before and after international travel.
From the Publisher
“This is an excellent review text for physicians and other health care professionals who see patients for pre-travel consultation.” -Mayo Clinic Proceedings

"Consumers flock online for 24/7 health information...But when it comes to reliable, easy-to-understand information on a wide range of medical, health and fitness issues, a number of new books belong in any informed patient's library... picks for the best health books of 2009....The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guide. . .In a new feature, the book cites potential ailments found at specific destinations-traveling to Peru to see Machu Picchu, for example, you may face acute mountain sickness and the bites of parasitic sand flies. Sections address the risks of going overseas for medical care, health concerns when traveling with infants and children, and medical issues to consider with international adoptions." -Wall Street Journal 2009
