Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
A boy awaits his injured father's return from the Civil War; PW commended this picture-book treatment of the consequences of war as ``unusual and timely.'' Ages 5-7. (Mar.)
Children's Literature - Susie Wilde
Lyon's tells of a young farm boy waiting and hoping that his father will return from the Civil War. The images chosen by illustrator Catalanotto are as emotive as Lyon's words. He shows the reader the loneliness and fear a child feels when is father is missing and the comfort of a re-united family.

Gr 1-3-- The trauma of separation is sensitively explored in a Civil War setting in this evocative picture book. A child worries and waits at a neighbor's farm for his mother to return with his wounded father. Each page has a simple line or two of text, complemented dramatically by double-page watercolor paintings of extraordinary quality. The passage of time is shown visually and subtly in the movement of the sun across the page, in the development of a chicken embryo, and in the changing of seasons. Movement is translated visually by repeated images, as in the wild circling of the dog when Papa returns. Today, many children are experiencing separation fears as parents go to war. This book addresses those fears honestly and feelingly, with a believable and reassuring conclusion. Life and life's work continue--the chickens must be fed, the fields plowed--even if drastically altered by outside events, and Papa is still Papa, even with one arm missing. Whether or not children are verbalizing their own thoughts about the current Gulf situation, this book provides a safe distance for looking at another child's fears. Cecil's Story is well worth serious consideration. --Lee Bock, Brown County Public Libraries, Green Bay, WI
