Overview

Breaking away from Goodie Mob for a major-label solo debut, Cee-Lo follows the curious lead of OutKast, who had recently broken through big-time with Stankonia, and unleashes a willfully weird album that eschews rap clichés in favor of full-fledged songs that are more neo-soul than hip-hop. He'd always been more of a crooner than a rapper, of course, but the tattooed big man really lurches forward with his singing voice here on Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections, crossing Al Green's down-home soul singing with Rick James' freakishness. Touchstones only go so far, however, as Cee-Lo is a free spirit if anything -- he goes out of his way to be himself and only himself here, to the extent that the album's commercial hopes seem questionable at best. That's not to say that Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections is an unsatisfying album per se. It's just that this is an edgy album, one that goes out of its way to challenge your expectations of what a major-label (neo-soul? Southern rap?) release should sound like. There's nothing prepackaged here, absolutely nothing. The lead single, "Closet Freak," is a good choice, but even that song is pretty far out-there and sounds unlike anything on the charts in 2002 sans OutKast. Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections is ultimately an album for folks who like their music creative, folks who like to hear an artist climb out on a limb and chase his muse, regardless of whether or not the result falls into any clear-cut genre boundaries. It helps, of course, if you like Cee-Lo, because this is undoubtedly his show -- there aren't really any guest star producers, rappers, or singers here, just the big man himself center stage. Kudos to the head of Arista, L.A. Reid, for letting Cee-Lo fly his freak flag with such freedom. It's not often you get a major-label release that's this daring and this colorful, surely not often enough. [Arista released a clean edition for those who prefer to forgo the album's profanity.]

did everyone elese know like i knew that cee-lo was somethin special the first time we heard goodie's first cd. he just stood out, not that he was better than the other fellas, but he was just different, as each of them are. cop this cd...you won't regret it...just based on the first release, it is well worth it. who else could or would do somehing of this nature. bangs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This isnt a cd. This is a compliation of the various songs he was on. Though i may say the songs are good, i'm not feeling the fact they bring out a *new* cd with a bunch of old hits.

To the mystery fan above, if you actually got the CD youd know that it is all new songs. For the rest of you, GET THIS CD! If you havent had the privelage to hear Lo on the G Mo B albums then this is a good place to start. Since his first verse on Kast's Git up, Git out I knew he was something special. Since then i have gotten anything that he has been a part of. You might be thrown off at first because this album is different then anything you have ever heard. Lo combines rapping and singing perfectly, and the beats are just sick. Get this CD, listen to it, feel it, but most importantly, listen to the lyrics. It comes with the lyrics (a rarity for a hip hop album, but then again Lo isnt your normal hiphopper) so read them along with the songs. Dont miss anything he says. You'll soon see why he is the hip hop savior. On most hip hop albums the lyrics are useless (unless you like hearing about how much ''ice'' that particular rapper has). But Lo is completely different. He takes hip hop back to an art form. He blows my mind with some of his lyrics. Please get this album and tell me if im right. Then go out and get the Goodie albums; T-mo, Khujo, and Gipp bring it too, although not at the level of Lo. COP THIS CD!!!!

First off, a prior reviewer spoke of the recycled songs on this album. Also, I noticed that the picture on the cover is not the picture on the cover of the same cd I bought from the store. I was wondering if this is an entirely different cd from the one I recently purchased (with the same title). The one I have is all new music and is far superior to most of the work listed on this track list. No disrespect to Goodie Mob or the rest of the DF. This is has a fantastic album bringing together a diverse range of musical genres (all provided by one artist). Please, if you are selling the new version of this cd, with all new tracks...update your list, so potential buyers can understand how much Cee-Lo really has to offer as a solo artist!

Put it like this, Outkast and anything affiliated is new age, a new style and a new twist that's gonna change alot of things in the future. The first heard lyrics from the family was a banger (southernplaya...) Since then everything that's come out the D.F. has been a fore runner of new life. Too many aspects can be related to in just one single verse... You gotta just sit back and take that lyrical and harmonious journey... If you don't like it now, take a few months from it and come back... Might be a little lateto realize but I gurantee you'll come back to it and it will stay in constant rotation. Some of us are a little slower than others to recognize what's hot and what's not... But cop the C-LO and the rest of the familys hits... Dirty Dirty Peace

Before you jump on the Southern bandwagon and cop ''..Perfect Imperfections'', know that Cee-Lo is not the hip-hop savior. Being a part of the Dungeon family and having his material heavily influenced by the true hip-hop saviors (OutKast) is a plus, however, he can not hold a candle to Dre and Big Boi. His lyrics are nowhere near the level of an Andre3000 or a Common and at times become both stagnant and vain. The photography within the jewell case itself represents his arrogance as one picture portrays him in the image of Jesus Christ. With that aside, ''..Perfect Imperfections'' has a great deal of musical value. Cee-Lo has drawn on his influences of the past (Led Zeppelin, Billy Idol, Earth Wind & Fire, Al Green, Santana) to create a very diverse sound much like OutKast has done with Stankonia. He drives out the dance beats in ''Closet Freak'' and ''..Suga Baby''. ''..Suga Baby'' having an extremely welcome verse from Big Gipp (my personal favorite Goodie) where Gipp tears it up with his even-flow and laid back verse. ''Country Love'' adds to the mixing pot with stellar harmonica play from John Popper, you know, the guy from Blues Traveller who fell off the map about 5 years ago. And finally, ''Gettin' Grown'' has a fun-loving beat representing the best lyrics of the album as Cee-Lo demonstrates his maturity and surprisingly a little modesty as he recognizes the personal changes he has to make as one is ''Gettin Grown.'' Get the album for its musical value, just don't expect it to blow your mind lyrically. 4 stars musically, 3 stars lyrically.

This cd is out of this world. This is old school funk from back in the day. The lyrics are off the hook too! If you like OutKast, D.F. Express, GOODIE MO B, and tha whole click, then get this. CD of the decade already. I would have givin this more stars if I could.

If you have followed the DF then you now that there will be a lot of funk on this albulm!! Not only that but a lot of originality that some of you favorite rappers shy away from. No ice!! No Cristal!! just C-Lo puring his heart out over funk beats!! a must get for any Goodie Mob, Outkast or DF fan! P.S the list of songs that are shown are wrong!!! this is all new material!!! not old songs put togeather!! pls fix!!

Cee.lo Green's, first solo album experience is one I hope he repeats again, and again! This album is: exciting, creative, yet inspiraing, a emotional roller coaster filled with different perspectives of life and experience. Which is genius how he captured each moment and each story. With songs like ''Gettin Grown'', ''(El Derado Sunrise) Super Chicken'', and power rap tracks like ''Microhard'' and ''One For The Road''. He had me crying, yet challenging myself. This Imperfect experience is one we all should be talking about, and if you haven't experienced it I DARE you to go pick that up, you'll be amazed, spell bound, and having strange cravings to repeat the album again and again!!! I'm wondering how'll he'll top this one! lol

First of all the Barnes and Noble Track list is COMPLETELY wrong!!! Get it together folks.... Having said that, this CD is off the hook!!!! If your an old head (like me) and grew up on Parlament, Ohio Players, Bootsy, New Birth, Isley Brothers, the old Prince etc. your going to love this CD!!! It really takes me back to the Mothership Connection..... Those were the years...... For me this CD speaks of a musical creativity that has been missing in Hip-Hop and definately takes it to a new level.

One of the most amazing disks I have ever heard musicly, however, it is the prophetic lyrics that leave me in awe. Not since dylan has one taken this much of a risk with prophecy in thier lyrics...Beautiful!

I've listened to a lot of music in my 58 years. This CD is proof that Cee-Lo is pure genius. Every cut is strong and meaningful. Listen to the rhymes and stimulate your mind, listen to the melodies and stimulate your body. Such a diverse grouping of tunes and musical instruments makes each cut unique. I thank my 18 year old son for turning me on to this CD. I have become picky with the music I now listen to and Cee-Lo is like hearing a legend being born. I haven't been this excited about an artist in a long time.

Ceelo = truth in the purist form.

Cee-lo says the things that most rappers today will not say because they are stuck on the ice, cars, and women. This CD is a necessity for the true hip-hop fan.
