Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
Independent scholar Purdy, the author of articles about political science, women's studies, economics, and popular culture, has edited a concise five-volume set about women's impact on American history from the Colonial period to the present. Each volume represents a different era in American history. Chapters cover subject areas such as women in society, health, education, politics, science and medicine, arts and literature, business, entertainment, and work and family. An introduction provides an overview of each period, and each chapter contains numerous illustrations, boxed entries highlighting specific people or events, and a list of books, articles, and websites for further reading. Easily navigable, the chapters are also richly detailed with illustrations, photographs, and boxed features that highlight a particular person or event during the period. For example, Volume 5 features a boxed entry for Frances Perkins, secretary of labor during Franklin Roosevelt's presidency, and provides a detailed account of her background and appointment. BOTTOM LINE A welcome highlight of many under-recognized figures in U.S. history, especially suitable for high school, public, and academic collections.—Diane Fulkerson, Univ. of South Florida-Polytechnic Lib., Lakeland
