Overview

Lieutenant Eve Dallas is no party girl, but she's managing to have a reasonably good time at the celebrity-packed bash celebrating The Icove Agenda, a film based on one of her famous cases. It's a little spooky seeing the actress playing her, who looks almost like her long-lost twin. Not as unsettling, though, as seeing the actress who plays Peabody drowned in the lap pool on the roof of the director's luxury building. Now she's at the center of a crime scene-and Eve is more than ready to get out of her high heels and strap on her holster and step into the role she was born to play: cop.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

For Lieutenant Eve Dallas, a rare night of Park Avenue townhouse partying turns into something infinitely more serious when a sexy actress turns up dead in a rooftop swimming pool. J.D. Robb's latest In Death caper turns up a slew of likely suspects and some clever stealthy sleuthing by our futuristic crime-fighter. Bound to be a bestseller.

Jules Herbert

Publishers Weekly
Murder, sex, and blackmail all figure in bestseller Robb’s smart, well-crafted 35th Eve Dallas novel set in mid-21st-century New York City (after 2011’s Dallas to New York). Lt. Eve Dallas feels a little uneasy attending a party at Hollywood mogul Mason Roundtree’s Park Avenue townhouse to celebrate The Icove Agenda, the movie adaptation of a high-profile murder case solved by Eve and her police cohorts. Eve has even more cause for concern after 28-year-old actress K.T. Harris, who makes a drunken scene at dinner, later turns up dead in the lap pool on the townhouse roof. Could K.T. have fallen into the pool by accident? Or was it foul play? K.T. had plenty of enemies, including Marlo Durn, who plays Eve in the film and could pass for Eve’s sister: “I hated her. She was a sick, bitter bully.” Eve’s wealthy and charming husband, Rourke, lends support while Eve and Detective Peabody pursue yet another gripping case. Agent: Amy Berkower. (Feb.)
Kirkus Reviews
A Hollywood party at which Lt. Eve Dallas and Det. Delia Peabody get to spend quality time with the actresses playing them in a new movie is interrupted by what turns out to be only the latest in a long string of murders. Now that potty-mouthed journalist Nadine Furst has sold her book about still another of Eve's innumerable triumphs (Treachery in Death, 2011, etc.) to Joel Steinburger's Big Bang Productions, the cameras are rolling on Marlo Durn, playing Eve; K.T. Harris, playing Peabody; and Julian Cross, playing Eve's husband Roarke, the world's sexiest millionaire. But the onscreen mayhem is topped by the news that K.T. has stepped out of a dinner party bringing the lead actresses together with the two detectives they're playing, gone upstairs for a smoke and ended up dead in a rooftop swimming pool. K.T. is soon unmasked as a conniving blackmailer who'll be missed mainly by her bewildered parents back home. With so many potential victims of her craft--director Mason Roundtree, his wife Connie Burkette, publicist Valerie Xaviar, Marlo's lover, actor Matthew Zank--literally in the same room, how can Eve and Peabody possibly spot a killer who's already moved on by eliminating a potential witness? Only by getting a hunch to dig deeper into one suspect's background and find a trail of homicide leading back from the future to the early 2020s. Their discovery leads to a long, long wrap-up--leaning on possible accomplices, inducing one of them to wear a wire, trapping the killer into another attempted murder, parading the array of evidence after a high-profile arrest--all of it eminently routine. Robb does all too little with the promising notion of doubling the cops with the actresses who play them, or indeed with any other elements of this futuristic, but surprisingly retro, closed-circle game of Hollywood squares.

Meet the Author

Nora Roberts
Nora Roberts

J.D. Robb is the pseudonym for a number one New York Times bestselling author of more than 190 novels, including the futuristic suspense In Death series. There are more than 400 million copies of her books in print.

Biography

Not only has Nora Roberts written more bestsellers than anyone else in the world (according to Publishers Weekly), she’s also created a hybrid genre of her own: the futuristic detective romance. And that’s on top of mastering every subgenre in the romance pie: the family saga, the historical, the suspense novel. But this most prolific and versatile of authors might never have tapped into her native talent if it hadn't been for one fateful snowstorm.

As her fans well know, in 1979 a blizzard trapped Roberts at home for a week with two bored little kids and a dwindling supply of chocolate. To maintain her sanity, Roberts started scribbling a story -- a romance novel like the Harlequin paperbacks she'd recently begun reading. The resulting manuscript was rejected by Harlequin, but that didn't matter to Roberts. She was hooked on writing. Several rejected manuscripts later, her first book was accepted for publication by Silhouette.

For several years, Roberts wrote category romances for Silhouette -- short books written to the publisher's specifications for length, subject matter and style, and marketed as part of a series of similar books. Roberts has said she never found the form restrictive. "If you write in category, you write knowing there's a framework, there are reader expectations," she explained. "If this doesn't suit you, you shouldn't write it. I don't believe for one moment you can write well what you wouldn't read for pleasure."

Roberts never violated the reader's expectations, but she did show a gift for bringing something fresh to the romance formula. Her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), had as its heroine a strong-willed horse groom, in contrast to the fluttering young nurses and secretaries who populated most romances at the time. But Roberts's books didn't make significant waves until 1985, when she published Playing the Odds, which introduced the MacGregor clan. It was the first bestseller of many.

Roberts soon made a name for herself as a writer of spellbinding multigenerational sagas, creating families like the Scottish MacGregors, the Irish Donovans and the Ukrainian Stanislaskis. She also began working on romantic suspense novels, in which the love story unfolds beneath a looming threat of violence or disaster. She grew so prolific that she outstripped her publishers' ability to print and market Nora Roberts books, so she created an alter ego, J.D. Robb. Under the pseudonym, she began writing romantic detective novels set in the future. By then, millions of readers had discovered what Publishers Weekly called her "immeasurable diversity and talent."

Although the style and substance of her books has grown, Roberts remains loyal to the genre that launched her career. As she says, "The romance novel at its core celebrates that rush of emotions you have when you are falling in love, and it's a lovely thing to relive those feelings through a book."

Good To Know

Roberts still lives in the same Maryland house she occupied when she first started writing -- though her carpenter husband has built on some additions. She and her husband also own Turn the Page Bookstore Café in Boonsboro, Maryland. When Roberts isn't busy writing, she likes to drop by the store, which specializes in Civil War titles as well as autographed copies of her own books.

Roberts sued fellow writer Janet Dailey in 1997, accusing her of plagiarizing numerous passages of her work over a period of years. Dailey paid a settlement and publicly apologized, blaming stress and a psychological disorder for her misconduct.

Low key but emotional- great addition to the series.

Celebrity in Death is the latest book in the Eve Dallas series and it is almost contemplative compared to some of the earlier books. Eve is the subject of a vid that is being made based on Nadine Furst’s book about the Icove case. A dinner has been planned with the cast members and their real life counterparts to celebrate the near completion of the movie. As usual, Eve is grumpy about getting dressed up and having to attend a fancy social function. All of that changes when one of the actors ends up dead and Eve and Peabody have to solve the murder.
The victim, K.T. Harris, was disliked by everyone who worked with her and even had a tussle with Eve during the dinner. She was playing Peabody in the vid and her resemblance causes Eve and the rest of the NYPSD staff some moments of unease. AS they dig deeper into her life and death, they discover that K.T. had lots of secrets and was doing her best to disrupt the lives of her co-workers by various methods such as blackmail and coercion. It seems to Eve and Peabody that everyone has a motive and with the majority of the suspects being actors it is going to be difficult to really find out what happened.
This book has less of the action that earlier books had but more introspection into Eve and Roarke’s lives. Peabody and McNab have their special moments as well. Eve is moving on from the events that happened in Texas and coming to some measure of peace. Roarke still worries about Eve but looks back on his life and realizes how much balance Eve brought to him. Their relationship just keeps getting stronger and more loving. There are thirty four books in this series and they only cover a little over two years which adds to the continuity of Eve’s relationships both personal and work related. The overlying theme of this book is about choices and how making a certain choice at a particular time has caused events to happen in each of the lives of the characters in the book. This is also the means that Eve uses to finally solve the murder-looking at choices made and how that person’s life was affected by them. It all ties together and makes this a satisfying addition to the series.

Still going strong as the 34th in the series is released

Reporter Nadine Furst and friend of Eve wrote a book about the Icove case and now has caught the attention of the big screen movie moguls who’ve made it into a major motion picture production, near the end of filming it’s decided that a grand party is due and of course the people who inspired the real life case have to be there too, which means that Eve and Peabody are in attendance when a death occurs. It at first appears perhaps accidental but soon becomes a murder investigation which turns into more than one murder investigation and soon Eve is up to her armpits in suspects but low on evidence.
With the help of her crack team of cops and her “civilian contractor” she puts together a cause and effect that may just become a movie of it’s own by the time all the facts are collected and the crime is solved.
When you’ve read 33 previous novels in a series there are bound to be a disappointment or two and this series is no different, but then you think of the accomplishment of it and you enter the realm of unbelievability. Number 34 is not a disappointment, in fact it’s astonishingly good. In her futuristic thriller series Ms. Robb takes us where Eve Duncan hates to tread into the glitter and sparkle of Celebrity as Nadine’s book about the Icove case comes to the big screen with big stars and big egos to match and of course in the course of the first few pages there’s a murder and it’s not the murder that stands out but the attention to detail this fabulous author goes into to catch this killer. We also get to as always catch up with the minor stars of the series who’s lives we’ve been invited into numerous times we also meet some new characters some you’ll like and some you won’t. The killer, you’ll meet him/her but you won’t know who he/she is until the author let’s you in. The love between Roarke and Eve is as always an integral part of the story because of it’s implausibility but perfection all the same. The narrative is flawless, the dialogue is all classic Robb with it’s hard edged and adult matter.
This fiery thriller will keep you on your toes and keep you entertained as you desperately try to solve the crime before the author let’s you in on her secret. It will appeal to both men and women and young and older adult audiences as well,

    first rate

Celebrity in Death is the 34th story in the “In Death” series by J.D. Robb. These stories are consistently first rate.

In this latest offering Eve and Peabody must find the murderer of the actress that was playing the part of Peabody in the movie adaptation of Nadines book on the Icove case.

You either love or hate these stories. Count me among those that love them and will continue to buy them as long as Ms. Roberts keeps writing them.

    a great read

    J. D. Robb has done it again, she pulled me right into the Eve's world and I didn't not want to let go. When an actress falls prey to her evil machinations, Eve must stand for her and sift out the one person who had the balls to shut this woman down. When Eve works a case, her dedicated pursuit of the killer will end when they are locked up in a cage and the irony is they don't think they belong there. Everything is in place for a great story, the murder, the apprehension of the killer, the romance, and the friendship. This was another great read in this wonderfully awesome series.

    Slow reading......

I own and have read the first 24 in this series.....I stopped buying them since they were starting to all be the same thing.......I just recently saw this new one and decided to try her again......still the same "stuff"....no new energy or ideas or experiences in this one either....so disappointed......was pretty decent to mid-way, then repetitive and slow......will barely be able to make myself finish it. I guess, after 34 books, it would be difficult to put new life into the stories......too bad. The first 3 in this series were the BEST books ever!!!!

I know after 34 books, it has to be hard to come up with origina

I know after 34 books, it has to be hard to come up with original stories...but remember the story where there was a cop that had a grudge against Eve? There was a lot of that book in this story. Someone has a grudge against the world and there are lots of people who would want her dead. I really really like the JD Robb series, i like them better than most books written under Nora Roberts, however, these books are starting to be repetitive, and predicable. Now, there was one difference here, the ending didn't include Eve having a huge fight. Usually i read her books in 2 days, this book, i kept putting it down, i couldn't get in to it. I was very sad about that. I am seriously debating about her next book. Perhaps 33 was enough.

Eve & Roarke do it again, manage to save themselves and all they hold dear with an iron fist

Tottally worth the money. Wouldnt miss a entry into this world for any amount. She shows such heart even while trying ti hide it. Icove merders where a while back but you neednt read it to get the story here. JD Robb workes all her books as stand alones so no dropping in the middle and playing catch up. She makes NY sing with life and being a murder cop a calling not a JOB makes you hope that if you should ever happen to need her assistance, youd die knowing you were not only avenged but that the unsub got a swift kick in his arse for his troubles.... Love love love it
Buy it rent it pass it around add it to your library it is a MUST have.

    SLOW

I have read 100 pages so far and just can't get interested. I have read all in the series and enjoyed all of them, but I am going to put this one down and maybe pick it up again later. I love reading Nora's books and it's ok to not like one once in a while.

This is another wonderful book about Lt Eve Dallas and her gorgeous, sexy, very wealthy husband Roarke. I love the way all of the characters interact with one another and even the supporting characters are able to grow in each book. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this series.

Was a quick read and the storyline was interesting, but a little lacking in creativity - a celebrity murder while filming a movie about Eve's Icove case left me waiting for more. I missed the sarcastic banter between characters; the jabs between Eve and Roarke, Eve and Peabody, Eve and anybody. Some were there but they were out of character and boring. Eve was a little soft, too mushy. Her comebacks were disappointing. It seems like Eve has settled comfortably into her marriage and her life. She seemed bored and into a tedium routine. No fun. Bring back her war with Sommerset, hear fear of Bella, Charles, Roarke's darker side (he was too nice!) and the twisted, unbelievable plots.

    Another great read

This is another smooth novel. Love the interactions between all of the characters and the growth of Peabody and McNab.
