Celia's lost her Robot—has she lost her father's love too?

Celia feels mixed up. She's the only half-Chinese kid she knows, her parents are fighting more and more, and fifth grade is a big, fat problem—Celia forgets to do her homework, can never find her violin for lessons, and loses all her school stuff in her disastrously messy room. Then Celia's dad, a famous robot scientist, has a brilliant idea: he'll build Celia a robot to turn her life around. Soon Celia is cleaning, organizing, and keeping on schedule with the help of quirky Robot. Part nanny, part housekeeper, and all friend, Robot is wonderful—but sometimes Celia wonders if Dad cares more about Robot than he does about her.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Nine-year-old Celia is a slob. She never picks up after herself, is constantly losing her possessions, is frequently late to school, and her bedroom looks like the aftermath of a hurricane. Her father is a robotic engineer and her mother is part of a traveling string quartet. On every birthday she gets something special that her dad has created; and on her tenth birthday, to her intense surprise and dismay, she gets a robot. She might imagine that the robot is to be her personal slave, but the robot acts more like a substitute parent/governess, helping her organize her life, do her homework, and clean up her room. Celia begins to like her new, more organized life, and even discovers that playing with Robot is not, too, bad. She is supposed to keep the robot's existence a secret because it is a prototype and extremely advanced; yet, somehow, word leaks out. Before long Celia's robot is nobody's secret. Unfortunately, the obnoxious neighbor boy seems more than usually interested in Celia's robot, plus there is a scruffy stranger hanging around who might be the very corporate spy her father fears. This is an entertaining story, especially for girls who might be interested in science and computers, with some mystery, suspense, and just a hint of future romantic interests as well. There is also an element of multiculturalism because Celia is half-Chinese and her father is all-Chinese and sometimes American ways are hard for him to get used to. Reviewer: Myrna Dee Marler
School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Celia Chow's life gets a big improvement when her father presents her with his latest invention for her birthday. Robot helps the child keep her room neat, gets her homework done, and has her stick to a schedule, especially when her musician mom is on tour. At first Robot seems annoying, but over time the fifth grader likes her organized life. What is more bothersome is how her father seems to care more about Robot than he does about her. Convinced that his competition is out to steal his ideas, he seems paranoid about anyone seeing Robot's capabilities. So Celia is amazed when he acquiesces to her teacher's request for a school visit from Robot. Most of Celia's classmates are impressed, but her neighbor Tim gets mad when Robot will not listen to his commands and he ends up kicking it. When Celia's house is burglarized soon after, Celia immediately suspects him. She is partly correct, but soon finds herself in over her head as well as having to rely on Tim's help to try to retrieve Robot before her father comes home. Celia is an interesting character. Her struggle with being the only biracial student in her school adds to the plot, and will give readers more to think about than simply who stole Robot.—Stacy Dillon, LREI, New York City
Kirkus Reviews
Celia's cellist (Caucasian) mom and inventor (Chinese-American) dad are loving, busy parents whose work and travel mean less time for hand-holding over school and home routines. Celia's unusual tenth-birthday present is exactly right for any typical middle-grade child whose planning and organizational skills are lacking: Her father builds her a robot incorporating the cutting-edge AI vision and sorting technologies he is developing. In short and satisfying order, the robot has helped Celia clean up her room, get her homework and music practice done consistently and make it to the school bus on time, and she's the envy of a neighbor boy who has always wanted a robot of his own. Unfortunately, the robot's programming is also a corporate secret that a rival of her father's would like to get his hands on, and this rival is not above criminal espionage and theft to succeed. A bit of mystery plus solidly believable, complex friend-family relationships and a smart girl who's fearless about technology make for an appealing light read. (Science fiction. 9-12)
