Overview

Non-fans regard Céline Dion as ersatz and plastic, yet to those who love her, no one could be more real, with her impoverished childhood, her (creepy) manager-husband's struggle with cancer, her knack for howling out raw emotion. There's nothing cool about Céline Dion, and nothing clever. That's part of her appeal as an object of love or hatred — with most critics and committed music fans taking pleasure (or at least geeky solace) in their lofty contempt. This book documents Carl Wilson's brave and unprecedented year-long quest to find his inner Céline Dion fan, and explores how we define ourselves in the light of what we call good and bad, what we love and what we hate.

Carl Wilson's book on Celine Dion: a journey to wasting energy & precious paper Can you imagine spending so much energy on hating someone...??? And what a waste of paper as well. The Toronto Globe & Mail journalist Carl Wilson has certainly better things to do than a campaign of hatred against Celine Dion. It is everybody's absolute right not to like an entertainer, it is a question of taste but to spend precious time to disrespect someone to that extent boggles my mind. Why can't he recognize her achievement? After all, Celine Dion is one of the very few who went so far in record sales and show attendings. Can't we just be happy for her and most of all respect her fans...??? But of course, especially in Canada, we accept someone who has talent but can't tolerate if he or she is successful. Pity...
