Because of breakthroughs such as the "switching" mechanism of the p53 tumor suppressor gene, as well as many technical innovations, the number of investigators of cell death has rapidly expanded over the last few years. Students of apoptosis and other types of cell death hypothesize that virtually all cells are genetically programmed to self-destruct. In turn, they also have learned that massive cell death does not always represent pathology, but rather a normal and necessary "weeding out" in the development and life of an organism. The clinical implications are immense, as the understanding and ability to regulate this process may offer the potential to treat cancer and a wide variety of other disorders.

Purpose: The main purpose is to provide a comprehensive collection of methods that can be applied to the study of PCD. By concentrating on PCD, the various authors also make the important distinction between PCD and cellular necrosis. These objectives are very worthwhile and timely and the numerous chapters meet the editor's objectives.
Audience: The book would be useful to anyone who wants to learn about PCD in general, but it would be especially useful to someone who wished to study this process in the laboratory. Included among the large number of authors are many leading researchers in the field.
Features: There are a significant number of high quality illustrations in this book. The references are quite up-to-date, including some in 1994. It has a thorough table of contents and index. This is a high quality book and should be useful for several years to come.
