He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968, and is currently Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. His interests have ranged broadly from cardiac dynamics and electrophysiology to muscle contraction and cell biology. For ten years he headed a multi-investigator program grant to study the molecular mechanism of muscle contraction. He has earned many distinctions including the Kulka Award, JSEM Scientific Paper Award, and Founding Fellowship in the American Institute of Biomedical Engineers. He has organized numerous international conferences, has been on various journal editorial boards, and has authored nine books. His 1990 book, Muscles and Molecules: Uncovering the Principles of Biological Motion, won an "Excellence Award" from the Society for Technical Communication.
