Purpose: What we know about the immune system is constantly changing and books are often lacking new details even before they are printed. Dr. Abbas, as senior editor, has made a serious attempt to incorporate this growing body of knowledge in this book. Those who already own the sixth edition might not want to invest in this update, but for those working with the 5th edition or earlier, this may be a good time to upgrade.
Audience: Although it is intended for a basic immunology course for medical students, graduate students and dental students could easily make good use of it. Moreover, physicians who are less than familiar with current immunological concepts would find it a helpful resource.
Features: The book covers the subjects that are considered to be part of a basic immunology course. Each section clearly identifies concepts that are considered "take-home messages." Information designated as "in depth" is found in clearly marked boxes. The first-rate illustrations are available to instructors to use in their presentations. Important points are presented in summary form at the end of each chapter. Purchase of the book entitles the buyer to online access to Student Consult. The only area that is lacking depth is the information on the mucosal immune system, which has recently started to receive greater attention. No doubt the next edition will present greater detail on this aspect of immunology.
Assessment: As always Dr. Abbas and his coeditors have provided an excellent source of information about the immune system. The book is readable and the figures illustrate concepts very nicely. Several other textbooks convey the same sort of information and it is not always clear why a course director would choose one over another. Nonetheless, once again, this one is a winner.
