On the heels of her joint venture with Irish singing sensations Celtic Woman, which resulted in a CD and a concert DVD that was broadcast on PBS, young star Hayley Westenra digs deeper into the music of her heritage on her third solo disc, Celtic Treasure. Although a New Zealander by birth, Westenra traces her ancestors back to the Irish motherland (she even knows the name of the boat they set sail on in 1851). And with her pure, youthful voice, she launches into such classic folk material as "Danny Boy," "Scarborough Fair," and "The Last Rose of Summer" -- songs she learned on the knees of her grandparents as a child. But Westenra also embraces the wider world of song here, extending to the American standard "Shenandoah," a choir-backed "Whispering Hope," and even versions of Madame Butterfly's "Un bel di" (One Fine Day) and the John Dowland (and Sting?) inspired "Melancholy Interlude." Westenra originals like "Summer Rain" and "Let Me Die" show that the singer also has an eye on the future: "New music has to be written, new songs created, otherwise we are robbing the future of a past," she sagely writes. Still, it's with the timeless simplicity of the classic English hymn "Abide with Me" that Westenra signs off on this delightful musical journey.

This is a very interesting release . Despite the title, Haley manages to take this in a few different directions while managing to present a cohesive whole . The 2 songs that she co-authored are quite good and don't stray too far from the rest of the selections . The non-US version of this CD is called simply Treasure and that title might be more appropriate . If you are familiar with Haley, do not hesitate, buy this .

This CD is absolutely amazing! Possessing a naturally pure singing voice, Hayley tackles a wide variety of song styles with ease and grace. Because each one of these songs are lovely, it would be very difficult to choose a favorite. The original opening number transports you to a lush green forest of peace and healing and continues to carry the listener on an incredible journey unlike any other. From spirited folk "“Summer Fly”", to gentle renditions of classics "“Danny Boy”", to reverent hymns "“Abide With Me”", this girl has you smiling, crying and closing your eyes in pleasure. The only word of complaint that I have against this album is that it does not include five additional tracks from the international edition of the CD. The missing songs here are as follows: “Le Notte del Silenzo,” “Santa Lucia,” “The Heart Worships,” “E Pari Ra” and “Bist du Bei Mir.” Wal Mart sells a lively bonus track on their version of this CD called “The Mummer’s Dance,” which is unavailable anywhere else. Enjoy yet another amazing odyssey from this talented young lady!
