Overview

PBS viewers know the talents of Celtic Woman, an ensemble of five Irish singers who make their recording debut with this disc blending traditional folk, contemporary pop, and classical styles. With accompaniments ranging from full orchestra to chorus, delicate harp, and fiddle, the five -- Chlo, Lisa, Mav, rla, and Mirad -- lend their expressive voices to such standards as "Danny Boy" and "Ave Maria," as well as Enya's "Oronico Flow" and Ennio Morricone's "Nella Fantasia." Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up" is the inspirational conclusion to the program -- save for a pair of bonus tracks that round out this generally soothing set with some genuine Celtic flavor.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Gregory McIntosh
Manhattan Records' release of Celtic Woman is a compilation/collaboration between five unknown vocalists, introduced only by their first names (Chlo, Lisa, rla, Mav, and Mirad), who take turns chirping Irish ballads as heard through a dramatic, lush new age filter. Via reverb-heavy and thick keyboard atmospherics, the singers cover contemporary ground, such as Enya's "Orinoco Flow," to traditional melodies like "Danny Boy" and "Ave Maria." While each vocalist brings a separate lovely timbre to the table, each song shares a similar theatrical arrangement and plodding tempo that smoothes over any subtleties that might distinguish track from track, therefore fitting well sonically side by side, but leaving the listener yearning for a bit more dynamic. Overall Celtic Woman is a decent set of well-performed vocal pop, but ultimately more a soothing background soundtrack than anything memorable.

This CD starts with Chloë singing Walking in the Air. Wow! After hearing her sing, I've recently purchased her concert DVD of the same title - I haven't received it yet, but will put a rating in as soon as I see it. This CD is full of great songs. Enya's "May It Be" from Lord of the Rings is wonderfully sung by Lisa. This is one of my favorite CDs and highly recommend it.

I saw the concert on our local PBS station just last night, they played the program twice back to back and I just sat there for four hours listening to the most beautiful music I have ever heard - I called my local B&N and will pick up 5 copies today - great gift idea. A must have for anyone who enjoys Celtic music!

I watched this special on PBS last night and this music was so pure and these women's voices are amazing and beautiful! The violinist was fantastic...I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys this type of music as well as anyone that enjoys music in general. Their voices are indescribable-you have to hear it to believe it.

This is truely a breath of fresh air in todays lack of real vocal talent. I highly recomment this album to anyone who appreciates talent and tasteful music. Very relaxing and refreshing.

We watched the PBS special with great expectations of hearing something new and we were not disappointed in the least. Even the angels would be hard pressed to compete with these wonderfully talented women.

These charming ladies will leave you feeling happy and peaceful. From lively tunes like Si Do Mhaimeo I to almost-lullabys like Harry's Game, from catchy pieces like the Butterfly to the very moving One World and You Raise Me Up, these ladies sing a variety of tunes so as to make their angelic voices suitable for all ages and occasions. If you are looking for beautiful singing and delightful music, Celtic Woman 'takes the cake'.

The songs of Celtic Woman will be your favorite travel companions! In your car's stereo, or in your portable device while inflight, this beautiful melodies will harmonize your trip. Relax with Send Me a Song or Nella Fantasia, sense the motion with Siúil a Run and The Butterfly, or look at the clouds while inflight with Walking in the Air. I already travelled with these songs, maybe you can be the next!

These women are very wonderful vocalists. Anyone that enjoys the classic style of music with a modern twist is in for a treat with this album.

It isn't a great new breakthrough in music and it doesn't pretend to be. It is some very well done celtic songs done by some singers with very good voices and good musical backup. Just sit back, close your eyes and relax and listen. If you like the celtic sound this is a great album. I liked every song, as one reviewer had said there isn't a lot to distinguish one song from another. For me that was just fine, I love the delivery and it relaxes me.

This is one of the best Cd's I've ever bought. The only thing better then this Cd is seeing Celtic Woman perform live. I can't wait for a New Cd to come out.

I actually bought the DVD and listen/watch it daily. Their version of Orinco Flow is even better than Enya. The last two songs are my favorite. The percussion is heart-pounding, and still sends chills up my spine. I can only imagine how it sounds live and in-concert. My daughters 8 and 9 are also fans and are looking forward to their next tour to Chicago.

I first saw Celtic Woman on their PBS special by accident while channel surfing for something to watch! I am so glad I did! I got this C.D. for Christmas and I listen to it time and time again. The women of Celtic Woman have a strong vocal presence and soothing voices that will put you at ease. They cover the songs "Sail Away" previously performed by Enya and "You Raise Me Up" made by Josh Groban, Irish Classic "Danny Boy", "Someday" ,"Nella Fantasia" "Walking in the Air" and so many more! Play this when you want to relax, be taken away to another place, or for any occasion!

Overall, I found this to be a very pretty and enjoyable CD. It has many traditional Celtic songs as well as some newer creations, which don’t detract from the Celtic feel of this CD. The range of different songs is refreshing, and all of the artists have a lot of talent. I did think that sometimes it was a little bit “hokey”, like the producers were trying too hard, especially in the booklet, but it wasn’t as bad as it was with their CD “A New Journey.” The five artists are Chloe Agnew, Meav Ni Mhaolchatha, Lisa Kelly, Orla Fallon, and Mairead Nesbitt. Chloe – I’m sorry, but I think she’s overrated when whoever wrote the booklet touts her as a “magnificent” singer. She has a pleasant voice, a nice soprano, but not the kind of thing that makes you get goose bumps listening to it. Her parents are in show business, and that might be why she got to be part of this group. Chloe’s performances of “Walking in the Air” and “Someday” are okay, but I think that her “Ave Maria” and “Nella Fantasia” are prettier. She does sing high notes very prettily and I like listening to her sing, it’s just that she doesn’t have such an extraordinary voice. Meav – Meav has a beautiful soprano voice, but I was disappointed with “Danny Boy” and “She Moved Through the Fair.” I didn’t think they showed off Meav’s voice to the best of her ability. The bonus track, Si Do Mhaimeo I, is fantastic. This one exhibits Meav’s light, lovely voice in a lively melody. She’s brilliant on the high notes and has a great voice overall. Lisa – Lisa sings my favorite song on the CD, “You Raise Me Up.” This is the best of Lisa’s singing - nobody sings it like she does to give me chills all over, it is just that beautiful. Her other songs are not disappointing either “May It Be” is gorgeous. Lisa has a strong, sweet voice, and she is probably my favorite singer on this CD. Orla – I think Orla has a nice voice, but not the sort of thing I tend to listen to all the time. Her voice is “small” and mellow, pretty but something that seems like it would be better as a background. I do like her “Siuil A Run”, which she sings very, very well, and “Harry’s Game” suits her voice and is another of my favorite songs on the CD. Mairead – Mairead plays awesome fiddle music. Her songs on this CD are only a taste of what she can do, and if you like them I highly recommend her solo album, Raining Up. Personally, I love fiddle music and Mairead has become my favorite instrumental artist. The ladies sing together for some of the songs, “One World” and “The Soft Goodbye” are two of them, and that’s really beautiful to listen to. I recommend this CD to anyone who likes mellow vocal music, Celtic music, or beautiful female voices.
