Overview

Spanning three decades of American musical history, composing team Nate Royce and Gregory Solomon grow, desire, succeed, grieve and love the same woman. They also conquer Tin Pan Alley, struggle through the Great Depression, celebrate birth, mourn the dead and ride the leaps of radio, records, 8-tracks and cassettes. Along the way they encounter Duke Ellington, facing his entire band paralyzed with stage fright, Count Basie, succumbing to swindling contracts and the Sex Pistols swindling record labels. Nate's son, Ben Royce, comes of age in the turbulent sixties. His love for one woman, a svelte redhead named Rickie Taylor, embodies the great love once shared by both his father and Gregory. It is through love and loss, both past and present, that all three men finally confront Nate Royce's most crippling issue: determining how much to risk, balanced against what to settle for in life.

I loved this book. The characters were real and the chronicle of three generations was engrossing. One of those books you can't put down. And as a musician, the background of the music business was excellent. Cohen reveals the musician's struggle and the book is dotted with great stories about some of my favorite musicians and composers. Highly recommended, comfort food for the brain.

I have had the pleasure of reading bits and pieces of this book while it was in progress and I can't wait to read the finished version. Greg Cohen is a delightful and gifted writer and I look forward to many novels to follow.
