Overview

Rod Payne, the former All-American center at the University of Michigan and a Super Bowl champion with the Baltimore Ravens, never set out to explain the meaning of life to Steve Rom, a sportswriter and the kind of guy most professional athletes keep at a distance. After Steve was diagnosed with leukemia, however, Rod left his job as co-host of a daily sports radio talk show in Ann Arbor, his first post-football career, to help rally his friend back to health. Steve's future, once again, became clear. So too, however, did the challenges that lay ahead. What ensued was a 10-month battle for survival, one that would ultimately turn these friends into brothers.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This story teaches us about how we can work together as a team in life not just in sports. A must read for those that want to be inspired!!

Sometimes the truth hurts. And sometimes it's needed in order to grow. Steve Rom apparantly realized this and decided to share his epiphany. He realized he wasn't living life correctly, but only after learning so from his friend, Rod. Career, which Steve clearly saw was the be-all, end-all, really didn't amount to anything when he was sick in a hospital room with leukemia. Friendships did, relationships did. Kudos to him for understanding that and being real about his findings. A lot of people still need to learn to be real with themselves. The book, while written in a free- flowing, breezy style, is painful (no pun intended on Rod's last name), because it confronts issues that people are affraid of: tough childhoods, misplaced purpose in life, chasing the wind. But as Steve and Rod claim, miracles it seems can happen. Just never give up.

It's boring drivel about a guy's career more than anything.

This is a great story with a great outcome. The message coupled with anecdotes presents perspective to the reader and allows for reflection on what truly is important in one's life. Centered by a Miracle is a fun and quick read that will inspire the reader to try to attain their goals. I highly recommend this book. Rod's voice echoes through the book, through Steve and into my head. I am ready to be a teammate.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, normally I don't read these types of books but the subject matter was so heart felt that I couldn't pass it up. Anyone can be lifted up and inspired by this book.

I usually do not read books for pleasure, but when someone told me about this unique team of sports writer and athlete I was inspired to check it out. Who knew that such an odd couple could be friends, let alone achieve the miracle that they did. I couldn't believe how Rod, after just winning the Super Bowl, would choose to spend his time with a reporter. I watch the news relentlessy and can see that reporters are not considered the most genuine of people. But Rod obviously saw something that we didn't. The way that Steve and Rod's relationship took off so effortlessy proves to me that anything can happen in this world. It gives me hope that the types of things that I am looking for can be found. I recommend this book to anyone who is searching for something they just can't seem to find. If anything, I would suggest this book as a required read for pleasure. Some of the scenes were hilarious if not outrageous. Two thumbs up, Steve and Rod!

I so much enjoyed reading this book. Steve the author and patient was very heartfelt and had true emotion. I felt I was going through the treatments with him. To come through cancer once is a miracle but twice in a lifetime is truly remarkable. What is great about the author is that he is not bitter about life and living but merely interested in helping and healing the world. For his unselfish friend, Rod, who he had just met, cared so much about putting all things aside in his life and flew to Steve's bedside was a magnificant gesture on his part -- only thinking about saving some one elses life and put his on hold. Excellent story - this will truly put a championship ring in everyones hand. There should be more people like Steve and Rod in our world. We live in a very difficult world. Congratulations Steve!!!!! You are our hero. Rosa from Los Angeles. 5 stars/outstanding.

This was a great book! I could not put it down. Steve shares the story of his life before and during his battle with Leukemia. A well written book that illustrates the life lessons Steve learns from Rod such as team work, loyalty, and the meaning of a true friend. Rod went to his friend's side to give support and hope while his friend battled a life threatening disease. This story gives hope to anyone who is struggling with an obstacle through Steve's perspective by reminding us that we are not alone and that we can find support from friends, family, and most importantly God. Rod's perspective inspires and motivates the reader to be a friend to everyone. His actions remind you that you don't have to be an authority on a subject to give the needed emotional support to a friend, just being available as a friend and giving emotional support can help anyone overcome any obstacle. Most importantly Rod even imposes his support which I realized is important because many people won't ask for help when they need it. Even though the story is written to reflect Steve's experience, I was able to get to know Rod just as well throughout the story. A great story for anyone regardless of gender or age.

It's horrible! The book for some reason talks more about Steve Rom's experience at his newspaper in Ann Arbor than the real story, which should have been fabulously written about. Rod Payne's voice is totally absent from the book and he is listed as a coauthor. Where is the story about them? I feel like I wasted my $13. Can I get a refund?
