I really enjoyed this book. I learned some Roman history, and at the same time was treated to a easily readable story.
It's not "Ben-Hur", but enjoyable nontheless. Recommended.

Historical fiction can be a tricky thing to write. It has to feel authentic, doesn't it? This one has the feel big time. The way he weaves historical details into the plot is amazing. You discover fascinating details about ancient Rome as you follow Senior Centurion Glaxus Valtinius on his adventures from Germany to Rome. These include his encounters with incompetent superiors, battles with Gaulish warriors, and a thrillingly written bear hunt. There's even some romance when he's reunited with Calvinia in Rome. And it's in that grand and terrible city that he must stand face to face with the emperor and defend himself against his enemies. There are no dead spots in this one, no boring stretches where your mind wanders. It keeps you reading until the last page. Historical fiction at its best.

    Excellent Historical Fiction

This is an excellent novel based on a real event in Roman history. In AD 9 three legions under the command of General Varus were destroyed by Germanic tribes under the leadership of Arminius. The central character is Glaxus, a senior centurion nearing the end of his career. He must deal with treachery and the incompetence of Varus. The battle scenes are vivid and graphic. It is obvious the author has done his homework on the ancient Roman army and Roman society in general. The characters are truly memorable. Glaxus manages to retain his moral center in spite of the evils around him. His interactions with the Greek physician, Pindocles, never fail to entertain. Glaxus' experiences eventually lead him to the City of Rome itself. There, he rekindles his romance with Calvinia, and faces off with his enemies during a decisive meeting with the Emperpor Augustus. If you enjoy historical fiction, this is one you should read.
