Children's LiteratureOne in the "Where Does Our Food Come From?" series of six, this book explores the production and varieties of breakfast cereal. Using color photos and brief text, the book begins by describing cereal as a nutritious food containing protein and vitamins that provides energy. If you check the label of most breakfast cereals, the protein content is less than 8% with some as little as 2%. Additional "chapters" describe the growing of grains, cereal production—especially the puffing up of most cereal grains—and lastly, the placement of cereals on the food pyramid. Many of the photos are simply of dry cereal lying on a flat surface with few showing the actions that it takes to produce cereal from grain. A glossary, index and sources for further information are included. 2004, Weekly Reader Early Learning Library, Ages 5 to 7.
