Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
World renowned for its acoustic guitars, C.F. Martin & Co. was founded by a German immigrant of the same name in 1830s New York City. It is one of those rare companies that has prospered in a cyclical business; it remains privately held and is still headed by a descendant of the founder. Drawing on account books, letters, inventories, and other company documents, Gura (William S. Newman Distinguished Professor of American Literature and Culture, Univ. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) documents the early evolution of Martin from importer and instrument repairman to successful manufacturer and creator of some of the finest guitars ever made. Until then, guitar making had been a painstaking and time-consuming craft practiced only by highly trained luthiers on an individual basis. Martin's innovation and vision virtually created the production guitar and brought music into homes across the country. This attractive and entertaining history documents the earliest days of the premier guitar builders as well as the 19th-century American music trade, while Walter Carter's The Martin Book focuses on the evolution of the instruments themselves. Highly recommended. [In October, Bulfinch will publish Martin Guitar Masterpieces, a lavish showcase of instruments of star players like Elvis and Eric Clapton.-Ed.]-Eric C. Shoaf, Brown Univ.
