When i found out that I would be having a nephew I knew immediately that I wanted him to have this book. I remembered reading it when I was a child. I remembered it with great affection. I spent almost two years trying to hunt down the title and a copy of it but it was worth it. Baby nephew loves the colors and I know he will learn generosity through the lessons in this book.

My favorite

A Chair For my Mother was my favorite children's book. My mother was sad at thinking that she'd have to give up our copy to me when I left, but I searched for my own copy. The story always showed me that no matter the circumstances that the human race really could work together for the good of another.

This was my favorite book

Execelent book.. Im 26 and I remember reading this book when I was little. I recently got this book for my 2 and 3 year old sons and they adore this book. It show's how one little girl wanted to make her mom happy by saving up money to get her a new chair after loosing everything in a fire. A very touching story about a bond between a mother and daughter and her grandmother..

A Chair for My Mother

Vera B. Williams did an great job on her book, 'A Chair for My Mother.' I am amazed that the author/illustrator from New York didn't illustrate her first book until she was 52. Williams didn't pick up the pencil late she was an artist from an early age. At age nine Williams had one of her paintings in the WPA exhibit in the Modern Musuem of Art. She did a wonderful job with her book 'A Chair for My Mother, which won the Caldecott Honor Medal in 1983. I absolutely love this story. Every family has had their bumps in the road, some not as big as the fire that the family encountered, but everyone learns to move on and come together to get things done. This book is inspirational and shows that it may take a while to get what you need, but if you work hard you will get it. You also see the love the girl has for her mother, she is so excited to get her a chair. I think this book would interest children. They want to know what kind of chair is the girl getting, they will want to know if they survive after the fire. I really do enjoy this book.

I love the book by Vera B. Williams, 'A Chair for My Mother.' This book does an amazing job to show how excited a little girl was to get her mother a new chair. It was horrible to read that the little girl and her family had gone through their house burning down, but it was comforting to know they made it and were happy in the end.

A Chair for My Mother

A little girl, whose mother works very hard all day and when she comes home is very tired. The little girl wants a comfortable chair for her mother to sit in when she gets home. Everyday they put a little bit of change in a jar. It isn¿t much but after a while they have a whole lot of change saved up for the mother¿s new chair. One day on their way home, they noticed that their house was on fire. They lost everything and had to move. Once again they must start all over. After moving in with her aunt, she started saving for a chair for her mother, again. She was determined to save enough money to buy her mother a new chair. Read to find out what happens to the family. This is a great book with excellent illustrations. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how much love the little girl had for her mother. Vera B Williams, wrote this Caldecott Honor Book in 1982. She currently lives in New York City. Along with winning the Caldecott Honor Award for this book, she was the U.S. illustrator 2004 nominee for the Hans Christian Anderson Award. She didn¿t write her first books until she was forty-six and she has been writing ever since. Her real life experiences are the major motivations for the story line in her books.

Caldecott Honor Book

Everything the family had worked for in life had burned when their house caught fire. They had started to rebuild their lives with the help of their community, but one thing that they really missed from their old home was a big, comfy, overstuffed chair that they could all relax in. So each day, the little girl and her mother put most of what they made into a large jar. However, while filling the jar seemed to be impossible, the hopes that the money in the jar would buy them a new chair kept them dedicated. The question was, `would they ever fill the jar, and how long would it take?¿ A Chair for My Mother is an amazing story which describes the importance of both love and family for both children and adults. I never got to read this book as a child, but I am really glad that I got to read it now. This book beautifully illustrates with bold pictures how while sometimes life can be really difficult, if you have the love and support of your family and friends, you can get through basically anything. The family in this book, had everything they had ever worked for taken from them by fire, but with hard work and the support of their family and their community, they started to build a new life. Because they did not give up, they did not fail. Vera Williams is the mother of three children and she currently lives in New York City. She graduated from Black Mountain College in North Carolina where she majored in graphic art. Ms. Williams has had a variety of career jobs ranging from graphic art to being a mother and a writer. She has also taught school, run a bakery, and cooked in both schools and restaurants. Almost all of her books are either based on or are related to events which have happened in her life. A Chair For My Mother is a touching story about a little girl and her mother. They lost their home in a fire and are living in a small apartment. One thing that the girl wants for her mother is a 'wonderful, beautiful, fat, soft armchair.' In order to buy the chair, the girl and her mother save change and tips, but as the girl says about her mother 'Some days she has lots of tips. Some days she has only a little.' In this beautifully illustrated book a family is working hard to recover after a fire has destroyed their home. The family keeps a jar of change on top of a shelf at their home and everyday they put all of their loose change in it. The family is trying to raise enough money to go buy a new chair. Every time that the family needed to relax or do something they had to do it from the hard kitchen chairs that had been donated to them after the fire. Everyone in the family agreed that you couldn¿t relax on a hard wooden chair. The family in this book had all decided that the chair that they wanted for their house needed to be a big plush velvet chair with roses all over it. Read this story to find out if the family can raise enough money to buy a chair, and if so, will they ever find a velvet chair with roses on it? The author of this book Vera B. Williams lives in New York City. She has won several awards for her writing, such as the Caldecott Honor Award for this particular book, and she was also the U.S. illustrator 2004 nominee for the Hans Christian Anderson Award. Her love for drawing began at a very early age, when she was encouraged to draw, act, and tell stories about her drawings at a place called the Bronx House in her neighborhood. She did not write her first book until the age of forty-six, but has been writing every since. She enjoys including things that occur in her real life into her children¿s books, so you never know what may pop up next.

Beautiful pictures

Vera B. Williams began her career as an author later on in her life. She used to create books for her own children, but it was not until her mid-forties and with her children grown that she illustrated her first book for publication. During her childhood she loved to tell stories, act and dance. Now she puts this energy toward her many books. She also writes and draws for adults-short stories, leaflets, and posters. This Caldecott honor picture book tells the story of a little girl whose home burned a year ago. Since the fire her family has moved to a new apartment. However, they did lose everything due to the fire and now they do not have much. ¿All that was left of the house was turned to charcoal and ashes,¿ says the little girl in the book when she tells us about how her house looked after the fire. Their family and neighbors helped them and donated pots and pans, a kitchen table and a few wooden chairs, and even through a party for them the day they moved into their new place. Now the family wants to buy a soft chair for the living room because they do not have any furniture in that room. They start saving all of the coins that they get into a big jar and they hope that when the jar is full that they will have enough money to buy themselves a chair. ¿It takes a long time to fill a jar this big,¿ says the little girl in the book. Finally the jar is full and they are able to buy the chair of their choice.

Wonderful story

A Chair For My Mother is a charming story of the struggles a little girl and her hard working, waitress mother encounter. The family suffers a complete loss from a fire but is assisted by the community to rebuild their lives. There is one piece of furniture missing from their past lives which are desperately needed, a chair. As they save every dime to purchase a wonderful, overstuffed, chair for the mother, the strength and dedication of a family is depicted. This is a well written, warm and fuzzy story. Beautifully illustrated, coupled with bold colors, which follow the story perfectly. This is a great, feel good, bedtime story for any age. Vera Williams graduated Black Mountain College in North Carolina in 1949 majoring in Graphic Art. After several jobs and three children, while living on a houseboat in the bay at Vancouver, British Columbia, Williams wrote her first book. Williams has several awards to her credit. A Chair for My Mother earned her a Caldecott award, Cherries and Cherrie Pits won 1986 Parents¿ Choice Silver Honor 1991 Parents' Choice Paperback Book Gold Award. Other awards Williams has earned are Music, Music for Everyone, won 1984 Parents' Choice Silver Honor Stringbean's Trip to the Shining Sea, won 1988 Parents' Choice Gold Award Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe, won 1981 Parents' Choice Gold Award, and Scooter, earned Williams the 1993 Parents' Choice Gold Award.Williams is also an illustrator as well as an award winning author for adults-short stories, leaflets, and posters.

My favorite book

Wow. I am a student and this is a great childrens book. The book shows you how you can reach your goals by teamwork and hard work.

A truly inspiriring story of love and support of family

This was a heartwarming story about an African American family. Their struggles have made the family even more stronger in their pursuit for a comfortable life.

I think the book A Chair For My Mother is a great because I like the way that Vera made her characters support each other to reach a goal. I liked her illustrations because every picture matched the text and the colors were all bright.

An Excellent Story!

A Chair for My Mother is a great book. This book has beautiful, bright pictures. This was my bedtime story. My favorite book growing up. I was lucky enough to meet Vera (the author). She was a kind, gentle, soft woman. She took the time to sign the books, and then talk about them. She let our picture be taken together. To this day, I have it sitting on my dresser. This was and still is my favorite book. If you are unsure on if to buy it or not, Buy it! It will be a cherished keepsake in your home forever.

A Chair for My Mother...Absolutely Awesome!!!

This book deals with a family that has to work hard to make it through tough times. A mother and a daughter work hard at a local diner to save money for their money jar,to buy a new chair.In the end of the book they have their new chair, and they are so proud of it. This book portrays great teamwork and dedication. I loved the bright pictures too!!! This book is very useful and lots of fun to read.
