...the intent here is not problems for the sake of rote practice, but problems to encourage thought and interest, and to give kids a feel for the many fascinating real-world uses of math. Metric conversions are demonstrated with measurements of elephant tusks, viruses, and the wingspans of ancient dragonflies; statistics explained with examples taken from medical research; ratios and proportions taught with jumping fleas, metal alloys, map scales, and the heights of trees. All the basics are here too: for example, kid-friendly introductions to the Pythagorean theorem, the "how-tos" of dividing fractions and coordinate graphing, the distinctions among sine, cosine, and tangent, the formulas for calculating the volumes of cylinders and spheres. Challenge Math is a great resource for the worksheet-discouraged and the mathematically curious.

This is one of the best challenge math resources for elementary students who look for more challenge. There is  an abundance of rich problem solving along with small tutorials and practice problems for algebra, probability, geometry, etc., and the problems are leveled by difficulty. Students can approach problems from multiple problem-solving strategies. The answer key which also includes explanation is in the back. Some of the questions are challenge enough for gifted students. It's not like math contest questions that have nothing to do with curricula. Those can help kids master what they learn in school. My kid uses Beestar weekly online contest, a program requires a lot of out of box thinking skills to excel. Using this book has helped him to achieve higher rank in the honor roll. I recommend this book to students aiming to A in math.
