Overview

For several decades educators have struggled to identify the attributes all sciences have in common. In the popular mind this effort constitutes the importance of teaching “the” scientific method. In the policy maker’s world this pursuit yields standards for all Americans that unify the sciences. For teachers, the quest for unity has typically meant teaching science as process. However, a curriculum that prioritizes what all sciences have in common obscures their vital differences. For example, studying landslides is very different from doing x-ray diffraction; climate science is unlike medical research. Naïve ideas about scientific unity impoverish the public’s ability to evaluate scientific enterprises. Challenging Science Standards voices skepticism towards the quest for unity. Through analyses of disciplinary knowledge, school curricula, and classroom learning, the book uncovers flaws in the unifying dimensions of the science standards. It proposes respect for disciplinary diversity and attention to questions of value in choosing what science to teach. Illuminated by vignettes of children and adolescents studying topics ranging from snail populations to horse fossils, Challenging Science Standards proposes promising remedies.

About the Author

Charles R. Ault, Jr. (“Kip”) Professor Emeritus, Lewis&Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling, taught courses in science education, field geology, natural history, and curriculum theory to elementary and secondary science teachers for three decades. His early research addressed children’s conceptions of time, matter, and energy and his more recent interests have focused on earth science education.
Charles R. Ault, Jr. (“Kip”), professor emeritus, Lewis&Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling, coordinated the school’s Master of Arts in Teaching program for science teachers for more than two decades. Kip began his career teaching primary grades and middle school science in Connecticut and Colorado. Author of Do Elephants Have Knees? and Challenging Science Standards, his writing reflects an interest in paleontology and the value of subject diversity in the reform of school science.

In an era when standards have become the preeminent metric for assessing educational quality, Charles Ault’s Challenging Science Standards demonstrates a level of intellectual courage unfortunately rare in academic circles. He argues that the quest for educational standards mirrors the bureaucratic quest for order, measurement, and accountability, a pursuit that with forests destroys biological diversity and reduces a woodland’s bounty to only a few products. He suggests that the same thing happens in schools when a false unity is imposed upon the methodological and conceptual diversity of the scientific disciplines. Rather than seeking curricular coherence through the invention of a collection of fictional scientific universals, Ault argues that coherence can be better achieved by inviting students to enact the complexity of the different disciplines in the places where they live. The unity sought by curriculum designers can then be achieved through story, lived experience, and real-life contexts. This is a recipe for enlivening interest, value, and meaning—a recipe that seem more likely to engender powerful learning than complex grids of behavioral objectives.

The many methods employed to create new knowledge in the many fields of science and mathematics cannot be described by a simple set of procedures. Over the years, numerous curriculum attempts to do so result more in obfuscation than clarification of the complex nature of creating new understandings, and they do little to assist students in pursuing their own inquiries.
