Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Robertson Mason
The term chameleon is often used to mean someone or something that changes easily to fit in or hide. True chameleons, however, change colors to stand out. It is the primary method of communication for these lizards. The author of this book, a part of the "World of Reptiles" series, tries to explain what it is like to be a chameleon. He describes the life cycle, habitat, and predators of these unique animals in simple text patterns. On each page are beautiful pictures, mostly photographs, to help readers understand the text. It also includes a table of contents and a basic index, as well as a link to "Fact Hound," a web resource that helps young researchers find age appropriate Internet sites. It is important to note that this book is not meant to teach reading; it is meant to teach science. This means that not all difficult words are in the glossary, only the ones related to biology and ecology. Still, this is a great resource as a supplemental text or as a way to get young boys to read more. Remedial reading teachers at higher grade levels will also find this book useful, since the format and topic are not babyish.
