Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The history of the NBA championship is covered in the first chapter and readers will learn the name of the trophy, the first team to win the championship, which is more than 60 years old, and also learn that there was no TV or Internet coverage of these early games. Today fans in more than 200 countries can watch the games, and all the statistics that you could ever want are available at your fingertips on the Internet. How about those teams that seemed to win consecutively—dynasties? Readers have an opportunity to learn about the Minneapolis Lakers—the first of the dynasties and players whose names have faded into the past. Some whose names are very familiar include the Boston Celtics, who won 11 titles in 13 seasons under the famous coach and general manager Red Auerbach. The Los Angels Lakers are a team I loved to watch with one of the greatest centers in NBA history, Kareen Abdul-Jabbar. The Chicago bulls were also pretty powerful with the great Michael Jordan to help them win championships. Another powerhouse team is the San Antonio Spurs with four NBA titles in nine years. The last chapter highlights some of the most memorable championship games and all the winners are listed along with the individual selected as the MVP. The book is liberally illustrated with action shots of past and more recent teams and games. A very good choice for reluctant boy readers who may not be reading on grade level, this title is part of the "NBA" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
