Overview

A new family has just arrived in the isolated mountain town of Telluride, Colorado. Welcome the Johnstons - Jason (a doctor), Rachel (a designer), and their niece Emily (a current High School Senior).

Emily has lived the life of a quiet loner in the past, trying to go unnoticed. But with Telluride being such a small and welcoming town, she finds a group of friends at school almost immediately. When Emily meets Link (another new transplant in town) her world turns upside down. She doesn't understand why she feels a magnetic pull toward him, or why she unknowingly lets her guard down around him. Link is just as confused by his own need to be with her.

Emily knows she is playing with fire. She should be doing whatever she can to keep herself isolated, to keep Link from getting too close. Danger has a way of finding Emily's family - that is what keeps them on the move. They arrive in a new town every few years - it is safer that way.

Because... Emily isn't really Emily... her real name is Charity - and Charity has an even bigger secret. Charity and her family are not like other people, they have "skills" that mere mortals cannot begin to comprehend.

Before long, Charity is struggling with the reality that her two lives are coming closer to each other with each passing day. Soon Link will find himself wrapped in a supernatural world that he never knew existed - and discover that mortals are not the only beings that walk this earth.

Editorial Reviews

Telluride Magazine - John Nizalowski
A Chance for Charity is a true Telluride locals' novel, complete with scenes set in the Village Market and the gondola, with Montrose as a Christmas shopping destination. It's as if the secretive and supernatural Elliot family in Ray Bradbury's novel From the Dust Returned lived in the San Juan Mountains instead of the Illinois prarie.

AMAZING BOOK THAT ANYONE COULD READ AND LOVE!!!!

This had to be the best book i ever read in my life at first i thought it was just going to be one of those books like twilight where a girl and boy fall in love even though they are not meant to be but this book was much more that that. this book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole book. i was so sad every time i had to put it down cause it was just great. there was never a part that you will just not want to read. it was romantic(my favorite thing about the book),sweet, funny and just a great read. i loved it. some parts you will laugh your head off and some parts you just want to cry about. This was not just a regular vampire book it was just mind blowing and every chance i get to read it again i do and so should you.

    Not Another Vampire Story

Faced with the daunting prospect of yet another high school, seventeen-year-old Emily Johnston is fully prepared to cope as she always does-by keeping a low profile. She, however, quickly finds herself surrounded by a group of friendly students, and strangely drawn to Link, the new mysterious stranger in town.

S.L. Baum quickly draws us into the intriguing life of Emily and her family. Why do they keep moving every few years? The story unfolds at a pace that allows the characters to be fully developed. The intense relationship between Emily and Link unfolds to divulge ... I won't tell! S.L. Baum's style is elegant and easy to follow. I enjoyed reading this book, as did my ten-year-old daughter. We are looking forward to the sequel!

Ehhh... Not the worst but I wouldn't say it's good

Boy does this book start slow... and progress slowly. The narrator keeps giving hints that something is unique about the main character-- oh you guessed it! She's immortal (already picked that up from the cover). You don't get the full story until about 2/3 the way in. But leading up to it nearly NOTHING happens. By the time the climax happens, it's predictable but does give the book some redeeming qualities. Charity is annoying, at best. She falls too quickly in love and acts way younger than she is. Also, sometimes it seems like a bunch of supernatural characters are tossed in just because they're "hot" in literature right now. The end is left open for a sequel, but I doubt I'll read it just because I can't imagine the story line can get much more trite.

    Loved it!!!

I absolutely LOVED this book! It was a little slow in the beginning. But once you know happened to 'Emily' and what's in her past, the story just gets better and better! I cannot wait for the next one, so hurry up with it!!!

    I Need Help Deciding

Dont pay attention to my rate becaus i have not read the sample yet and have yet to decide if i want to buy the book (with my daddys money of course). Okay so most of you said you absolutely loved the book but it was slow to progress. I love paranormal romance books but the thing is i dont like reading slow books because if they are slow if i put the book down im most likely not going to pick it back up. Heres the thing im a 14 year old girl that loves books that pull me in and dont let me out until im finished. If i really like a book and i start to read it in class i usually get told more than 3 times to put the book down and sometimes my teachers with threaten to take my book away if i dont put it down. I started to read "The Hunger Games" but couldnt finish it because it was so slow and really frustrated me. I need the help of the ppl who already read this and maybe even the ppl who tolerated The Hunger Games and tell me if this book progresses faster than the Hunger Games if so I REALLY REALLY WOULD LIKE TO KNOW SO I CAN GET A JUMP ON READING THIS "AMAZING" BOOK FAST!!!!! Th faster the response the more appreciation i will have for you and if you reply within 30 days of this post i promise to leave a list of reccomendations of books that were so good i cried either because it was the last book in the series and left you at a cliff hanger or because i want to read more, and more, and more!!!!!!! Thank you guys for putting up or reading this enormously long post and to the ppl who respond you dont know how much it means to me and how much i appreciate you taking an interest in my dilemma and i promise to post the list within two weeks of your response. I intend on checking the reviews every day until i get a response.
    A Huge Thank You,
    Your Fellow 14 year-old Bookworm

I got this book through a 'Lend Me'.  I thought it looked intere

I got this book through a 'Lend Me'.  I thought it looked interesting and decided to give it a try.  It's actually not a bad book.  My main problem with was the method of writing.  A great deal of it was rather stiff and formal, even with the teenagers.  Instead of "I'm" it was "I am", "We'll" was "We will", etc.  I found myself substituting them in myself as it was making it hard to read.

The other issue I had was the quick acceptance of Link into their lives and her into his.  Also, I felt that he was a bit too mature to be 22 years old.

Despite all of that, it was an entertaining read and was something to pass my Sunday with.
