Overview

At the end of their freshman year, Chance Fortune and the Outlaws saved the universe. Though he lacks a superpower, fifteen-year-old Chance used his natural athleticism and quick wits to form his team into an effective fighting force. The Outlaws have learned to trust and rely upon one another. As the bonds of their friendship strengthen, Chance finds it more difficult than ever to conceal his true identity. When an apparent teleportation malfunction strands the team in the Shadow Zone, the Outlaws are put to the test once more. Teeming with supervillains exiled by the Brotherhood of Heroes, the Shadow Zone is a land of nightmares brought to life. And when Psy-Chick, Gothika, Iron Maiden, and Private Justice are kidnapped by the mysterious Shadowmen, Chance knows that he must set aside his doubts in order to save them.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The second in the "Chance Fortune" series, this story picks up with Chance and his fellow Outlaws (classmates from the Burlington Academy for the Superhuman) as they are pulled—through some type of teleportation malfunction—into the Shadow Zone. The Outlaws are divided, however, when Psy-chick, Gothika, Iron Maiden and private Justice are kidnapped by the Shadowmen and their leader, the Shadow Prince, and Chance and his remaining colleagues Space Cadet and Shocker are left for dead. Befriended by Viz, a young woman of the planet who has been fighting the Shadowmen after losing her brother to them, Chance and company strive to rescue their friends. At the same time, Psy-chick finds herself the unwilling object of the Shadow Prince's interest, but she is not clear why. As the two plots merge, we find that the Shadow Prince wants to use Psy-chick for her superpowers as a means of gaining revenge on his father. Can the Outlaws reunite to save themselves and those harassed by the Shadow men? This story works well and has a lot of solid adventure; the characters are also nicely developed. This is clearly a series that has much going for it in this book and in its upcoming entries. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
VOYA
This second book in The Adventures of Chance Fortune fantasy series follows the teen hero and his Outlaw gang as they try to escape from the Shadow Zone, a land of evil in which they find themselves after a teleporting malfunction. Ruled by the Shadow Prince, its creatures suck life from anyone they find, absorbing that energy in preparation for taking over the universe. The Outlaws are separated in the initial attack. Psy-chick, Gothika, Iron Maiden, and Private Justice are kidnapped, while Chance, Space Cadet (SC), and Shocker are rescued by Viz (Vision), a blue teen Morlock who assists them in their quest to find their companions. Setting out in daylight hours, which Shadowmen cannot tolerate, and using chameleon cloaks of invisibility supplied by Viz, the four teens conquer increasingly horrible enemies, while alternate chapters give updates on circumstances of the kidnapped. Berryhill brazenly uses props, settings, themes, characters, and situations from well-known authors, most notably J. K. Rowling and H. G. Wells, simply renaming or slightly altering the popular elements he extracts. Loyal and fearless, hero Chance is invincible and likely irresistible to those teen readers who love fast-paced, far-fetched adventure. Keeping track of invented powers and worlds is a challenge but one these special readers will probably welcome. Reviewer: Laura Woodruff
