Kadir Nelson, award-winning illustrator of books such as Henry's Freedom Box and We are the Ship, offers a tribute to our newest president, Barack Obama. To the text of speeches Obama has given (including his keynote at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 and the speech on the night of his election), Nelson has added eloquent pencil drawings of the man, the movement, and the people affected by this historic election. The book opens with a small sign that says "Vote" and ends with an illustration of a young African American holding a sign that says "Hope." This pair of signifiers well sums up what the election of our first African American president meant to millions here and abroad. The chosen text and the accompanying drawings reignite the inspiration offered by Obama and help remind us, in these dark economic times, that we can change things, both through the vote and through our own actions. Two-time Caldecott Honor winner Nelson here gives up his studied compositions and meticulous applications of color in favor of quick, emotion-laden graphite sketches that commemorate Barack Obama's groundbreaking campaign and victory. Set to Obama's own words, gathered from several speeches given from 2004 to his acceptance speech on Nov. 4, 2008, the illustrations neatly provide visual accompaniment to the oratory. A long line of patient voters stretches across two-and-a-half pages before the next turn reveals citizens in voting booths, as the text reads, "It's the answer told by lines / that stretched around schools and churches / in numbers this nation has never seen." Martin Luther King Jr. leads a march in another spread; the page turn reveals the White House. The wee trim size, creamy stock and ornately loopy typeface gives the volume both intimacy and ceremonial weight. Meet the Author

Kadir Nelson is the widely acclaimed illustrator of many books for children, including Thunder Rose, written by Jerdine Nolen, which received a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Award; Ellington Was Not a Street, written by Ntozake Shange, which received a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award; and Hewitt Anderson's Great Big Life, written by Jerdine Nolen, which won the 2005 Society of Illustrators Gold Medal. He is also the illustrator of Deloris Jordan and Roslyn M. Jordan's Salt in His Shoes and Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee's Please, Baby, Please and Please, Puppy, Please. Mr. Nelson lives with his family in San Diego, California.

    Change Has Come, by Kadir Nelson

    Kadir Nelson has captured the mood of the majority of voters in the 2008 election by using impressionistic drawings. The immediacy of the illustrations reflects the tension and the hope of the people as well as the courage, calm and compassion of Barack Obama. This is the book I want my grandchildren to see when they ask about the election of Barack Obama to the office of President of the United States.

    A beautiful, moving homage to Obama, and to US!

    What a pleasant surprise! Everyone I've shown this to is moved -- some to tears -- by the drawings, which depict Obama's campaign -- including right up to Grant Park on election night! The drawings by themselves are so moving, but then when married with Obama's own words take your breath away. This will be on our coffee table at our Obama Inauguration Party; I think I'll even make one a door prize!

    Awesome book!!

    I have already given many copies as gifts for my friends. This is a very special book! Kadir Nelson is the best illustrator I have ever seen and to do this in just 10 days is unbelievable. These images in charcoal are so real and beautiful with all the different faces, truly reflecting our diversity. I highly recommend this book as a keepsake for the children and the adults.

    Stunning!

    I work @ b&n and I first day I found this in the receiving room I was captivated! This book is perfect for anyone that really appreciates art and the inspiration President Obama brings to our nation. It's a simple, elegant book that captures the spirit of the 44th President. It's also great because it is something completely different from all the other commemorative books about Obama. This is a treasure of a book. :)
