Fantastic book! I read it in one sitting last night, and it took a few turns I wasn't expecting. If you are not made of stone, you will have at least welling eyes by the time you read the last page.

The sexy, dashing, dark hero standing over the lovely, innocent maiden is usually what attracts me first to a book, I then read the back and see what the story is about. I'm so very glad that I took a chance and listened to the reviewers about this book instead of judging it by its cover. It is very well written. The story flows, its not overly descriptive and the characters come alive. It is not steamy in the least, no hot passion or secret trysts, but by the end of the book I realized that I didn't even miss them. Im anxious to read the rest of this authors books.

A hardened rake must marry an heiress to save the debt-riddden estates he inherited from his father and brothers, so who better to wed than his friend, who is also secretly an heiress. This book has such wonderfully damaged, but redeemable main characters and a host of other great secondary characters. It also has one of my favorite opening scenes as the heroine helps the hero "rate" the curent crop of debutantes and then agrees to help him find a bride. It's a witty and poignant story--definitely not to be missed.

Beautifully written, without all the lustiness of other Regency writers

This book is very good and you first meet the hero who you're not too sure if you want to like him and soon find that you really care what happens to him.
The heroine is one that has "hidden" charms that no one ever plumbed to discover! She was taken at face value and found "wanting" by the males of this era. Out hero soon discovers to his surprise, her warm and caring personality.
They have to go through trials and problems but it makes for a wonderful, emotional ride! Anyone who wants a book with real three-dimensional people who have defects but try to over-come them--this is the book for you.
It is a very good read and one of my favorites of Hern's books.

This novel is full of interesting, unusual characters and situations while still satisfying that need for a happy ending to a love story. The plot centers on a man who must marry to recoup his fortunes and a woman who believes she is unable to marry because of the traumatic circumstances of her upbringing. Very sensitively done. An unusual and very enjoyable read.

Love Candice Hern. This is a great book for the price with lots of classic romance and a few fun turns. Definitely worth buying with all the other Herb regency romances.

This is the first i have read by this author, and i have to say that i was not disappointed at all. It was a well developed story that really got you to love both the hero and herroin! (My spelling is horrible, i know) I am excited to read some of her other works!

I have to admit - when I started this, I ended up starting it a few times. Soemthing better always came up.
I am admitting now - I was wrong. Once I got into this book, I didn't put it down until I was done.
I've said it before and I'll say it againa nd again - you can't go wrong with Candice.
Excellent cover work, but brilliant writting.

This book is a Regency Romance at its best. Full of Heyeresque wit, but also very emotional. It reminds me of Mary Balogh's books, which is saying a lot. I was captured from the first page, where the hero and heroine meet. Sexual sparks don't fly, but a bantering friendship develops right away. As another reviewer said, the hero is not very heroic in the beginning (though I liked him anyway), and his transformation from cynic to a man in love in what this book is all about. And the heroine is simply wonderful. Loved this book!

I love this book. The hero and heroine are not your average romance protagonists. Both are emotionally damaged and Jack, the hero, is actually not the most sympathetic romance hero. He's mercenary and selfish, but also has a powerful turnabout as his character grows to love the vulnerable yet lively Mary. This is my idea of a perfect Regency: full of wit and great secondary characters and loads of Regency flavor. But have several hankies on hand. There are several scenes that had me wiping my eyes. I must also comment on the beautiful new covers. Absolutely gorgeous.

Lots of emotion in this classic novel. A flawed but to-die-for hero and a spunky heroine you'll never forget.
