Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheree vanVreede
Part of the American Girls Collection, this is book six on the life of Josefina, a Hispanic girl in 1824 living in New Mexico. This book continues to chronicle the culture and spirit of the times, as do all of the books in the American Girls Collection. It contains a brief summary in the back of the book of the time period. In this story, we learn about the Feast of the Three Kings, which is an event marking the journey of the Three Wise Men. We also learn about family dynamics in this society. Josefina's father chooses a new wife after the death of her mother. Josefina must struggle to accept this new woman in her mother's role.

    What Is To Come?

What Is To Come? In this sixth book of Josefina's series many new occurrences will come to Josefina and her family. Plenty of twists and turns are in this storyline to keep readers interested in the changes that are in Josefina's future. Beautiful, detailed color illustrations add to the storyline and make it vivid and alive. **Great book series for young girls that want to explore other cultures. "A Peek Into The Past" at the end of the book offers fascinating facts about life in the early 1800s. For example, the history of the Sante Fe Trail, Mexico's independence from Spain, and how a traditional home on a New Mexican rancho would have looked like are in this section. This is a quote from this section: page 63 - 64, "...the Mexican War was fought farther south and west until 1848. When the war ended, the United States had taken almost all the land that is now New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado, as well as parts of other states."

    One of the best

I really liked the part when Josefina baked the bread. Josefina is my favorite of the American Girls.

    Josefina and her hopes...

...are supre to lift yours as well. This is one of the best Josefina books. It made me so sad when I finished the book. Josefina seems to have quite some problem keeping her hopes up. Tia Dorles is leaving thier ranch and the sisters are upset.
