Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Of all of Kit's relatives, Uncle Hendrick is perhaps the most unappealing. He's cranky, opinionated, pessimistic, and not at all shy. But when this bossy old man comes to live with her family, Kit learns a lesson about hope in hard times.
Children's Literature - Suzanna E. Henshon
Something wonderful is about to happen to Kit Kittredge. When she arrives home from school, Mother presents Kit with a new coat and hat. Is it possible to buy new things in the middle of the Great Depression? When Kit visits the local soup kitchen her heart aches for children there. She knows she is lucky to have food and shelter, but Kit desires to help other people. Can one young girl make a difference in the world? Kit becomes like a fairy godmother in Cinderella when she presents a coat to a homeless girl, but just when things are looking up, Uncle Hendrick comes to visit. He is cranky and eccentric; he insists that Kit entertain him and type his letters to the editor. Kit learns that words can bring hope during difficult times. The pen is indeed mightier than the sword, so Kit writes her own letter to the editor; but will anyone listen to a young girl? In the last story in the Kit series, Valerie Tripp provides another wonderful chapter in these Depression era stories. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.
