Overview

Mags was a Trainee in the Heraldic Collegium in Haven, Valdemar’s capital city. Though his background of poverty and abuse at Cole Pieters’ gem mine set him apart from most other trainees, nonetheless he had found his own group of friends. Bear, Lena, and Amily were all students whose situations in life set them apart from more usual Trainees. The four of them had found mutual support in their shared misfortunes, and together struggled to help one another find solutions to their individual problems.

But Mags’ friendship with Amily brought him to the attention of the King’s Own. The seemingly immortal Companion Rolan had Chosen Nikolas to suit the specific needs of the current monarch, and those needs were for an agent who could collect information surreptitiously. Nikolas recognized the same traits in Mags that Rolan had recognized in him and because of Mags’ friendship with Amily, no one would think twice about seeing her overprotective father spending time with Amily’s “suitor.”

So Mags began training as Nikolas’ partner. They worked in disguise at night with Mags as Nikolas’ deaf and mute helper, where his extensive knowledge of gems — especially his skill at separating the real from the fake — would be an added benefit. Hiding in the shadows behind the desk, pretending to neither hear nor speak, Mags could better “observe” the clients, and even the surrounding neighborhood. And Nikolas could send him out on “errands” to chase down leads.

But this new job was far more dangerous than Mags had ever considered. For there were mysterious agents in the city — agents who sought to bring down the kingdom, and no one knew where they came from or who they worked for. They were smart, talented, and preternaturally fast. And most of all they were willing to do anything — anything — to bring Valdemar to ruin.

    Where is the ending?

I positively love all of her other valdemar books.....and this one does have potential, but it read like a rough draft and I truly felt like it ended in the middle of the book. All of the questions that were raised in the first books about Mags are left unanswered. a few things about mag's friends were answered, but not much....also mags speach patterns in the books were at times difficult to translate. I'm holding out the hope that the next book she writes about valdemar will recapture the magic of almost all of her previous ones.

    outsanding fantasy

Valdemar has Companions shaped like horses but are much more as they can talk to their riders, can create magical spells, and intelligently defend against enemies. Mags was an orphan who was rescued from the slavery of the mines and was chosen by the Companion Dallen to be his Rider. Right now, the teammates work for the King's Own Herald Nikolas in a blighted neighborhood.

Nikolas pretends to be a pawn broker and Mags is his deaf mute son. They search for anyone who abetted the assassins when they failed to kill Mags or the King. The head Herald figures out that the throwaway children living in a dumpy apartment had contact with the four killers who were killed. Mags learns what the children know and Nikolas shuts him out of the case. The lad finds out more assassins plan to kidnap Nikolas' daughter who is the love of Mags' life.

The third Collegium Chronicles (see Intrigues and Foundation) continues the coming of age fantasy saga of Mags, Bardic Trainee Lena and Healing Trainee Bear with the emphasis on the rookie Herald. The exciting story line contains a partial cliffhanger as the readers know who deploys the assassins but not why. The key cast is fully developed with background interwoven into the plot as for instance Mags is almost obsessed with a need for information about his parents; this anchors the Mercedes Lackey world of Valdemar

    I Also Recommend:

Kirball. Lots and lots of Kirball

Mag's story has SO much potential and the book kept diverting back to Kirball. In fact, the first 3rd of the book dealt with that. Its not that I'm not interested, but that's a side-story, to me. I'd have been happier if the focus of this book were the assassins and finding out who Mags really is...or more about the Collegeiums and how the changes there are going, with a side of Kirball. Also, I haven't checked, but if this is the last book in the series, I will be PEEVED, since there are still loads of questions unanswered. Worth reading, but not Ms. Lackey's best effort at all.

I can't tell if this is because it's the nook edition or if it's

I can't tell if this is because it's the nook edition or if it's this way in the hard copy as well, but I've had issues with her publisher before (for sure in hard copy). I love the story, but the typos and silly mistakes in editing drive me nuts. "Hera;ds", "here" instead of "hear", for example. And while I understand Mags' speech is part of his character, sometimes it's almost impossible to read. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the story. These things are just throwing me out of it.

    Disappointing

Mercedes Lackey got too much into page-filling descriptions of Kirball games, etc. The plot was really weak and in the end - nothing was resolved. The mystery of Mag's ancestry was left open, overall, just disappointing.
This comes from an avid reader of Mercedes Lackey.

    Disapointing

I agree with a previous reviewer that this book was vastly disappointing. I have been a loyal Lackey fan for the past 15 years and I have to wonder if a ghost writer took over for her. Honestly I haven't been to thrilled with the collabrative efforts she's been doing the last few years so I have limited myself to the Valdemar series only and it would be sad if those continued in the sadly low rate style if the past 2 books. Not only did nothing actually happen in this book , there were typos on every page, which was extremly distracting, Meg seemed to get (or at least sound) stupidier with each new page and the summer that the book took place in seemed to last a millinia! Ms. Lackey, please go back to writing like you did with Talias' story. At least then it sounded like you were enthused by the world of Valdemar. Now it's as if you are just plain tired but are stuck in a writing contract with no end in sight. This made me sad

Awesome Addition to the Collegium Chronicles

I am a huge fan of Mercedes Lackey and have been waiting impatiently for this book to come out. I loved this book and how it started up the story again without feeling like I had waited as long as I had. However, upon finishing it I felt the lack of a true ending... I hope this isn't going to be just a trilogy as most of her story lines seem to be, and if it is I hope the next Valdemar series coincides with this so I can stop stressing about the things unknown!!! :) All in all a wonderful read. I consider it a must read if you are a fan!

    good!

I simply love the Collegium Chronicles and this follow up is no different from the others. Mercedes Lackey did it again and this time with more gusto and passion for the plot. My imagination went wild while reading this and it is a must have for all you fantasy lovers out there.

SciFi Fans - This author is for you!

I have never read a book by Mercedes Lackey that I could put down until it was done, which can be awkward at times. Her characters are fully fleshed and her settings are wonderful places to lose yourself in.

    Cliff Hanger

Overall I enjoyed reading this installment in Lackey's valdemar series. However I feel, as other reviewers do, we need to know who mags is, why do the assassins know him? Sincerely hope there is a fourth book or even a novella that ties up lose ends

Good read but leaves some questions unanswered

Seems like there needs to be a forth book in the series...but she always seems to write 3 per series.

Highly Recommended - an excellent addition to the series

I have been reading the Valdemar Series for years and own all of the books. This addition to the other trilogies complemented them well. For all those other Valdemar addicts out there, buy it now. For those new to Valdemar, I might recommend starting with the first 3 books, "Arrows of the Queen", "Arrow's Flight", and "Arrow's Fall". But they are all excellent. This ended in such a way that I hope there is another trilogy coming...maybe the characters as adults? Hint, Misty? I will advise people new to the books that this is the third in a trilogy. It might be a little confusing if read as a stand-alone so I do advise buying and reading the other two books, "Foundation" and "Intrigues" first, if you're not going to buy or don't already own the other 28 or so books in the Valdemar world. These books have brought me many hours of enjoyment and are keepers. "Changes" is well worth the read. The books are excellent reading for all. The originals were excellent juvenile reading and the series has continued to be excellent reading for all age groups. I would have no problem encouraging my young teen grandchildren to read them, if I could get them away from their texting & gaming.
