Overview

I met Sarah Kate Erickson when I was twenty-one years old. I was lucky enough to keep her for seven years before a tragic accident stole her from me. She didn't die, but sometimes I think it would have been easier if she had.

I lived in a haze for those four years after the accident. Catering to her every need, even though she hated the very sight of my face. I tried to hold on to her and the future that we were supposed to build together. But you can't hold on to someone that doesn't exist anymore.

It wasn't until I met Jesse Addison, a barista at the local coffee shop, that I realized I didn't just lose Sarah that tragic night, I lost myself as well. Jesse taught me how to let go of the past and learn to love again. But what happens when your past haunts your present and the woman you used to love refuses to accept the woman you can't live without?

Changing Course was an emotionally exhausting read, but I mean t

Changing Course was an emotionally exhausting read, but I mean that in a positive way. Readers are introduced to Sarah and Brett through some flashbacks told from Brett's point of view. Sarah was a handful, spunky and likable in those flashbacks. Unfortunately, a tragic accident took that Sarah away and left behind one that was about as far from likable as you can imagine. But, Brett was devoted to her, and though they split up, he still loved her and tried to be there for her. He still lived his own life, but put his best interests aside as he catered to her. That is, until sassy, sweet and sexy waitress Jesse finally decides to act on her crush and makes a move.

So, here's the thing: I genuinely liked Sarah at the beginning of the book. She and Brett seemed to have a solid relationship built on something real. I had very mixed feelings when he started flirting with Jesse and when their relationship began to change into something more. That, however, quickly changed as more of Sarah's true colors became clear. God, she was such a manipulative b***h. I mean, straight up evil and insincere. She made me sick to my stomach.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Jesse from the beginning. I want to be her friend. I thoroughly enjoyed the chapters told from her perspective and it was apparent how much she really liked Brett. But, I had difficulties with their pairing because of Sarah. Conflicting emotions. So many of them. It was easy to forget my reservations as I observed more of Jesse and Brett together. They were perfection. They complemented each other so well and their relationship was natural. Real and believable.

Brett was incredible. Sexy, sweet, caring and flawed, he won my heart. Talk about someone with conflicting emotions... he had them all and I could feel every single one of them as I read. Through his eyes and his inner dialogue, it was easy to see how torn he was and how difficult the prospect of entering into a new relationship was. He was attracted to Jesse and they were well-matched, but he was reluctant to start something real because of his past, because his wife was still there... in a way.

Changing Course wasn't your typical second chance story. There were plot twists I could never have predicted and characters I just can't seem to let go of, for better or worse. Even the secondary characters were amazing. Am I the only one who wants the next book to be about Caleb and Kara? I'm shipping that hard. This book is best paired with some wine to calm the nerves and tissues to soak up the tears. I was completely enraptured by Brett and Jesse's story and everything and everyone involved.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

    My rating: 4.5 of 5 ¿¿

For four years after a car accident left his wife, Sarah, a stranger, Brett continues to hold on. No longer with hope, that disappeared long ago, but with a sense of responsibility and committment. Stuck in a promise to a woman that was only a memory to him now, making sure that the person who was left would be taken care of.

Every morning, for the past few months, Jess looks forward to the moment he walks in for his daily breakfast of yoghurt and granola. Working as a barrista while tackling her latest college degree keeps her bills paid, and her daily banter with the hot detective is a nice distraction. And then she finally has worked up enough courage to ask him out.

Brett has noticed Jess and is a little reluctant, to say the least, but once he has had the full effect of her, he feels himself starting to come alive. The strong mutual attraction takes no time flaring into full on sexual chemistry and things are suddenly moving at lightning speed. When Brett decides to finally tie off his past and move on, Sarah is not at all receptive.

It is not easy to let go of years of happy marriage and four years of stagnant dreams. It takes a few eye opening events to help Brett see who belongs in  his future.

    *****

O my heart!!! I may or may not have yelled out "you dumbass!!" a time or two during the reading of this book......I literally INHALED it!!

I know way back, when I read the synopsis the first time, I was intrigued by the concept and knew that I wanted to read it. But it is always a dangerous thing, because a really great synopsis can also be a huge disappointment once you have the book in your hands. Not here! Nope. It is everything it promised to be.

Brett really is the main player here, he is such a decent human being, even with his occasional temper. Standing by his wife, despite the fact that she has turned him away time and time again. He knows she needs someone and everyone else seems to have jumped ship, so he feels his committment from when they were still in love stands. But he is losing himself in the bargain, he has no life at all, he simply exists. His only lightpoint is his breakfast at the coffeeshop where Jess works. She becomes his life line.

She may seem shy and demure, but Jess is not quite the push over she looks to be. She feels way out of her league with the gorgeous Brett, and he at times can intimidate her, but he can never scare her. In fact, he encourages her to stand up for herself and speak out. So she does. She lays it all on the line for him and it scares her to death. But she is done playing it safe, nothing is gained by not going all out and she has decided that Brett is worth going all out for.

Amazing writing by Aly Martinez, a writer I am sure to keep a close eye on. A great writing style, an easy flow, fantastic dialogues and the ability to write love scenes that are both sweetly tender and five alarm hot!!! Yeah, not going to forget that name!!!

¿A gripping, insightful and sensuous knockout!!¿

    Changing Course by Aly Martinez

This is a standalone debut book by Aly Martinez.

This was an amazing gut-wrenching, roller coaster of a story that leaves you wanting to finish the book in one sitting. I couldn't put this down with all the emotional feelings for the characters.

Bret Sharp meets Sarah Erickson at a club one night and were inseparable for seven years until a tragic accident that takes her best friend's life while leaving her broken beyond repair.  Brett did everything he could to help his wife, even getting her her own place and visiting her once a week for four years.  Still married yet damaged himself, Brett meets Jesse Addison.

Jesse Addison a shy barista sees the HOT Brett Sharp in her shop Monday thru Thursday.  After weeks of pining over him she asks him on a date.   They begin dating and have tumultuous relationship with twists and turns and a "wife" who in crazy.  Brett realizes that Jesse is the silence that he needs to feel whole again.  But love is never that easy, and Brett must decide to either move forward with Jesse or stay in the past with a woman who is no longer emotionally his wife.

Thank you Aly for a great read. We look forward to reading more from you. <3

Changing Course is not a book that you simply read. You experie

Changing Course is not a book that you simply read. You experience it. You LIVE it. This beautiful debut will have your heart reeling even days after! Aly Martinez hit this one out of the park. It contains everything that makes a beautiful and heartbreaking romance.

Brett Sharp meets Sarah Erickson during one night out and his life is never the same. Sparks flew the minute they met. Eight months and 12 hours later, they were engaged and shortly after, married. Their love was passionate and all consuming. I loved them. They were funny, heartwarming, and most of all everything you'd want for yourself in a soulmate and more. April 18, 2008 is the date where everything that Brett and Sarah knew, changed. As you read, it's like you are on a happy train then ...a horrific tragedy causes Brett to lose Sarah. Not in death, but still heartbreaking and tragic, all the same. Sarah is simply a shell of what he used to be. While Sarah exists, the Sarah he loves has left. This shattered me. I thought to myself, how am I going to continue to read this? What kind of joy am I going to have now? Then my heart is suddenly put back together slowly, piece by piece. In a way I did not expect.

When Brett meets Jesse Addison, he realizes how much on life he has missed out on while trying to live for Sarah. Loving Sarah has caused him nothing but heartache and sorrow. Loving Jesse shows him how much love he has left to give. Without giving anything away, what happens when you begin to love someone, but cannot let go of your past completely to fully and truly love someone else? Brett is amazing character. Besides being gorgeous, he is the type of man that fights for love. He loves with conviction. He took his vows to Sarah seriously and continues to do so, even when she pushes him away.

If you think you know what will happen, you have no idea. Your heart will be pulled in so many directions. This story will captivate you where putting it down is not an option. I truly felt for Brett as his heart loved Sarah but knew he had to let her go at the same time while trying to love Jesse. Despite the tug of war on his heart, when Brett loves he does so mind, body, and soul. Whole heartedly.

“Do you promise to tell me if you realize you’ll never be able to fall in love with me? You know...not string me along.”

“ I swear on my life.”

“Do you promise to tell me the split second that you realize how stupid you are, and that you have loved me all along?”

“ I look forward to it."

The rolleroaster of emotions you feel throughout this book is insane. This story has ALL THE FEELS. The emotions are raw. You feel it ALL. Every. Single. One. Three people's lives will change forever. You will cry for joy and sadness. You will laugh, you will swoon, and most of all you will completely fall in love with all of these characters. Aly has definitely found a way to make sure that every character finds a place in your heart. They are all so real and genuine. You can't help but hold on to them, even after the book ends. If you are looking for an intense, heartbreaking passionate story about love, second chances, and fate, Changing Course is for you.

"Forever. It's a single word that holds so much promise. it means, no matter what, we will always fight for each other."

    5 star

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, betrayal, tragedy, love and heartbreak. Aly will make sure to pull all your emotions out so be prepared.

This is Brett’s story. I say Brett’s as this takes you through him falling in love, his marriage, how his marriage dissolved and then into his new love story. Brett and Sarah have lost the love that once burned deep. In one fatal swoop all was lost and now a crazy woman has replaced his wife. After years of just going through the motions of living Brett is moving on. Bring on crazy Sarah….. Can Brett convince Jesse that he is worth all the trouble that is about to come down on their relationship? Or will Sarah even though she does not want Brett ruin everything he was hoping to have with Jesse?

I loved Brett. There were times you want to smack him, Jesse, and Sarah. Loved that fact that the author took you back and forth so you really got to understand the characters and there frame of mind throughout the story.

On a side note the vegetable compare was freaking funny. Dill pickle spear!!! I laughed out loud at that!!!

I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next one.

    Holy. Crap.

Talk about emotional roller coaster! This book had me all over the place! I literally just finished about 30 seconds ago and I knew I had to write a review immediately while the overflow of emotions is fresh. I cannot count how many extreme mood swings this story caused. There were a few times I wanted to throw my iPad because Brett had me so angry, there were a lot of times that my heart swelled with love for Brett because of how sweet he was, there were numerous times I needed to stop for a minute to grab a tissue and let my eyes dry up, and I found myself laughing out loud a few times as well. This book was beautifully written and the descriptions were phenomenal. It was erotic without being dirty, and the love story is one of my favorite romances ever. Thank you Aly Martinez for being so brilliant!

I like/hated this book. I thought the story concept was good and was just emotional to leave me with a very small book hangover. However, the main distraction I had with this book is Jess. Apparently, this woman has no ability to actually just talk. She seems to scream every other thing she says. I don't know if the author just likes the word scream, but honestly, it's a pet-peeve of mine. At 26, no lady should be screaming during a conversation. Playful banter between her and Brett always lost its edge because Jess would "scream" a playful statement at Brett. During a dinner date, she "screamed" with laughter and "screamed" her playful response. Interactions with her best friend always, and I do mean always, involved "screaming" at laughter with each other. Toddlers scream when they talk. I just really HATE the word scream and it was literally on every page. It made Jess seem very immature, when I thought she could come across as very mature and acting her age.

My other problem was Brett and his best friend Caleb. There is a HUGE problem between these two. A problem that in real life would probably tear these two apart and stop them from being best friends. I cannot imagine, that with this problem, the police force would allow those two to continue working together. It popped up enough that it made me go "this is in no way believable."

Other then that, I liked the conflict Brett had. I could actually understand why he felt the way he did but at times I wanted to smack him over the head for being a blind idiot.

    Good romance

I enjoyed the book. Well written except for those annoying grammatical errors that seem more and more common in books nowadays. They are so distracting to a story. There was also one place at the end of story when a character seemed to be in two places at once and it was never explained how or why. But, honestly, a good love story. Angsty.

This book has an amazing story line. I was interested in reading it as soon as I saw what it was about.
It starts off with a bang and sucks you right in. It's sad and tragic yet beautiful and sarcastic. It's not too twisty but exciting and keeps you intrigued. Watching how people dealt with the issues at hand and the chemistry between the 2 guys was great.
I did find one of the characters annoying and childish but if you can get over that and get into the story then it's fine. It just so happens it's the main character :( and he uses way too many pet names, somewhat irritating. He isn't one of my favorite characters. However the rest of them are great. The characters are strong and you feel drawn to them right from the beginning.
If you're looking for something a little different then I suggest giving this book a shot.

    Great read

Loved this story. At first I really loved Brett and Sarah as a couple. Then once the accident happens I felt really bad for Brett. Sarah just becomes a horrible vindictive person.

I loved the dynamic between Brett and Jesse. Things were simple and easy between them which I loved. I liked that Jesse was sweet and innocent yet stood up for herself when needed. I was very happy when Brett finally pulled his head out of his butt!

    Overall great story.

    EXCELLENT DEBUT NOVEL, HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I received an ARC in return for an honest review. My reviews are 100% my own, my judgement and rating is in no way swayed because I am in receipt of an ARC. I review as though I have purchased and whether the content would satisfy that purchase.

So this is a debut novel from Aly Martinez and whilst I was happy to receive an ARC to review I pressed 'open' on my kindle with anxious fingers, a tad worried at what I was going to be reading, because let's face it with a new author it could go either way.

So firstly I had agreed to read this without even seeing the cover and oh my when I finally saw the cover I LOVED IT! So that was a good sign right ¿

I wasn't too sure what to expect from the synopsis, I was a little sceptical at how a three way relationship was going to keep me entertained........ love triangle reads are not ususally my cup of tea.

But..... OMG! - I LOVE it when a book does what this book just did - IT SHOCKED ME HOW GOOD IT WAS!

I cried, I laughed, I fought back more tears, I was itching to know how it was going to pan out with Sarah. I cried some more and I laughed a lot more too. The banter was such a diffuser all the way through.

What really got me though was the extremely clever writing, there is a part in this book that I bet over 90% of you will have to go back and re-read because your head will argue that wasn't what you 'had' just read and then you'll be shocked to see you fell victim to your mind reading and interpreting your own scene that wasn't what was actually written - well I did anyway. I was so invested in the story it tripped me up good and I loved, loved, LOVED that it caught me out. I had a stupid smirk on my face and silently said, 'Aly that was a clever bit of writing you just did!'

I won't go into the characters, there is no need, I'll only say they are so 3D and evoke all your emotions you'll be living their story with them. The only thing you REALLY need to know is - READ THIS BOOK

A cracking debut that is compelling reading and a must read for all Contemporary Romance lovers.
