Overview

A beloved daytime TV actress tackles the real-world issues women face at different times of their life through the various shoes (and roles) they wear.

You might be wondering what wisdom and life lessons a soap opera actress, dispatched from the land of outrageous and hilarious plots, has to offer. Well, no one knows more about reinvention and perseverance than an actress who began her career as the star of a show-and then became the mother of the star, and then the grandmother of the star-all while raising a son, taking care of her aging parents, and sustaining a happy marriage.

In Changing Shoes, Tina Sloan tells her story through humorous anecdotes about the shoes she has worn throughout her personal and professional life (from her college-girl pink Capezios to her first pair of Chanel pumps, to her white high heels and fitted nurse's uniform, to old sneakers and modern nurse's scrubs). Sloan imparts warm, relatable advice to which all women can relate, including looks, love lives and sexuality, careers, families, and sense of self.

Perfect book for all women; funny and informative

I think it's wonderful. Really. Sloan's voice rings through like a clarion throughout, and it's far more candid and true than I expected. She has written a love letter to her husband, a wonderful backstage biography about television soaps for all the fans, the best eulogy in the world for her aging parents, a glorious scrapbook for her friends and fans, and she's somehow managed to write an emotional memoir of her own along the way. I was moved by her stories such as having her son after so many miscarriages, but really I was struck by how honest Sloan is throughout. She writes in ALL CAPS about not being a WHINER about getting older but she's managed to be candid and true about real pain, and that's not whining at all. It's hugely important and I think this book will really help lots of women face aging in new ways. Sloan has written about her soul and how she managed to keep it.

like having a wise and funny friend light your way

In "Changing Shoes" Tina has done what those who have known her have begged her to do, share her secrets with the world. In typical Tina fashion, however, she doesn't lecture or give boring facts and figures. Instead she takes us on her wonderful adventures to other places, sits us backstage at "Guiding Light" and honestly recounts her struggles with family, fear, weight and aging. Unlike many other books by television personalities, "Changing Shoes" is not about image, it is an honest look at struggling with life's challenges, laughing at embarrassing moments and through it all "staying in the game". Reading "Changing Shoes" is like having a wise friend take you by the hand and walk you down the road of life.

    Inspiration for All!

If you're looking for the perfect gift for your mother, your sister, or anyone entering a new phase of life - this is it. The intended readership of Changing Shoes is made up of women hoping to age gracefully, but after reading it, I found its various messages valuable for anyone - young and old, female and male - who may be entering a new phase of life with fear and trepidation. Tina does not hold back: she shares her own fears and low points in an honest, humorous way and shows us new ways to think about and confront the inevitable changes life brings our way.

A Must read for woman 50 and over

I originally bought this book to support Tina sloan. I am an avid fan of Guiding Light. But, once I started reading it I couldn`t stop. It is an inspiration to women. It is written so well. It gave me so much insight into my own life.
I think most women will be able to relate to this book and identify with Tina on many different levels.
I am going to buy extra copies to give to my friends.

    Loved this book.

I loved watching Tina Sloan on "Guiding Light" and I was thrilled to find she was writing a book that detailed some of her time on the show and a lot of her thoughts about life. The subtitle's a bit misleading, this really is a book for anyone of any age group. It doesn't matter how young or old you are, you'll find the book laugh-out-loud funny, at times and a bit wistful at others.

Tina takes us through all of life's ups and downs talking about being an aging actress and watching how much things have changed. She talks about her life, her friends and her shoes. She talks about challenging herself to do things that seem impossible and she does conquer a lot of great things along the way. She shares her hardship over trying to balance her career while watching her aging parents slip away.

It truly is a book to be read by everyone. I urge everyone to pick up a copy and read it, you won't be disappointed.

Funny & inspirational just like the lady herself

I just finished Tina's "Changing Shoes" . I laughed and cried my way through the book. Then I got up, colored my hair and signed up for an adult education class I've had my eye on. Thanks Tina for the inspiration!

All Ages Will Enjoy This Book

Before reading Tina Sloan's "Changing Shoes" I was unsure if I would connect with it as I assumed the appeal was towards an older audience, but I was so wrong. I laughed, cried and related to many of the humorous stories and poignant life situations Tina writes about and have come away from this inspiring and engaging read with a new perspective on some of the older people in my life. And for those of you who enjoy Tina's entertaining personality on Twitter, you will clearly see after reading her book that you are getting the "@realtinasloan" when she tweets!

Excellent Book! Changing Shoes ~ Changing Lives!

The delightful, beautiful and talented Tina Sloan, star of the Guiding Light, hits hard with a candid, endearing and eye-opening book about "getting older- NOT OLD- with Style, Humor, and Grace." Changing Shoes, stylishly tackles the harsh reality of aging, through personal experiences, memories, triumphs and disappointment. There's a lot of fashion talk and shoe talk, yes, but Tina's book is for everyone, male and female, after all, aging is a universal fact of life. Its inevitable. I found myself identifying with Tina's feelings. I was also enlightened with a heightened sensitivity for my mother, my sisters and all women.

Remember the old adage about walking in someone else's shoes?

Tina cleverly walks you through four decades of Capezios, Chanels, Louboutins and well, sensible shoes, each one representing something youthful, funny, sexy or emotional. Changing Shoes is so beautifully written, that you can't help make Tina's experiences your own and relate to her feelings. In many cases, we've lived through similar experiences. Changing Shoes is an insightful window that offers readers answers and direction to real life human struggles about insecurities and self-esteem issues.

You don't have to be a Guiding Light fan to enjoy Changing Shoes. But if you are a fan, then you're in for a real treat! Tina shares so many stories about her twenty-six years as Nurse Lillian Raines on the Guiding Light in the book. She masterfully uses her soap character to illustrate her issues about getting older, as a woman and as a TV star.

Another aspect I loved about Changing Shoes is that Tina described how she coped and dealt with life, success, family, loss and aging. The book serves as an inspiration to embrace the changes that come with age proactively and live life to its fullest, at every age!
