Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“This is clearly a labor of love for LaRoche and will appeal to like-minded hockey-history buffs.” — Library Journal

“If you’re a hockey nerd, get set to rejoice.” — Quill & Quire

Library Journal
10/01/2014
LaRoche (Got 'Em, Got 'Em, Need 'Em) documents the growth of the National Hockey League (NHL), from the years leading up to the "Original Six era" that was the beginning of the NHL as it exists today, and continuing through each subsequent change in its ranks. Each of these modifications is addressed chronologically, with several pages dedicated to the circumstances that led up to the alteration and how it affected the league. The book also provides a brief history of the World Hockey Association (WHA)—a rival league that was able to lure star players by paying more than the comparatively low NHL paychecks—and its eventual merger with the NHL. Primarily focused on the teams, the volume includes sections with individual chapters on each team that joined the league at that juncture, providing the reader with details on the team's creation, its successes and missteps, as well as profiles of several players from its first season. VERDICT This is clearly a labor of love for LaRoche and will appeal to like-minded hockey-history buffs.—Sara Holder, McGill Univ. Libs., Montreal
